Co-founder of the Women's March makes her YA debut in a near future dystopian where a young girl and her brother must escape a xenophobic government to find sanctuary. It's 2032, and in this near-future America, all citizens are chipped and everyone is tracked--from buses to grocery stores. It's almost impossible to survive as an undocumented immigrant, but that's exactly what sixteen-year-old Vali is doing. She and her family have carved out a stable, happy life in small-town Vermont, but when Vali's mother's counterfeit chip starts malfunctioning and the Deportation Forces raid their town, they are forced to flee. Now on the run, Vali and her family are desperately trying to make it to her ta Luna's in California, a sanctuary state that is currently being walled off from the rest of the country. But when Vali's mother is detained before their journey even really begins, Vali must carry on with her younger brother across the country to make it to safety before it's too late. Gripping and urgent, co-authors Paola Mendoza and Abby Sher have crafted a narrative that is as haunting as it is hopeful in envisioning a future where everyone can find sanctuary.

⭐⭐⭐⭐
Crazy how this feels like real life. If anything, I could see this as a video game, the one with the choices that will lead to whatever ending you'll have depending on the choices.

Catching up on reviews. Sanctuary was incredibly good! It deals with a difficult topic, immigration, but I feel that it's important that more people read this book.

This book was haunting and terrifying. I felt invested in reading this as I turned the pages. I felt for the characters as they went through the hardships they face during the story and the ones they face outside of it. The year is 2032 in the United States. Now, everyone has chips in their wrists, making it nearly impossible to survive as undocumented. Soon, ⬇️

Zoe-h ⬆️California declares sanctuary to any undocumented people who reach it, and that‘s what Vali and Ernie set out to do, if they can avoid being caught by the Deportation Force. Such a thrilling read! 5🌟 (edited) 3y

First 5 star read of the year. This book set in the future was so scary because I feel like it could happen in the future. But I am hopeful that it won‘t happen. Citizens are chipped and scanned. It is impossible to survive as an undocumented immigrant. But that it what Vali and her family are doing. But when Vali mother‘s counterfeit chips starts to malfunction and she is caught. Vali and her brother flee to try to make it to the sanctuary safety

The Year: 2032. The eerily similar rhetoric to today that immigrants& refugees are dangerous, diseased& less than in the USA. The American Wall is built,& every citizen is chipped to be tracked. The Deportation Force are tasked to hunt down illegals, separate the families, and place men/women/children in brutal labor camps. This is not a dystopian world, but just a few steps away from the question, “what if?” From our country today....⬇️

Emily92Bibliophile ... current thoughts about this and our world today: how far will a human go and how can human being go treating others with cruelty, brutality, and hatred, all because they are different? We are living this and seeing this today. Many today have the privilege to pretend this racism and hate does not exist. For if it doesn‘t happen to you, how can it exist? (Leviticus 19:34, Leviticus 27:19, and Jeremiah 7:5-7) 3y

While this book is set in the near future, it is scary, because it could be today. Thank you Paola Mendoza for this eye-opening journey.
