Catching up on reviews. Sanctuary was incredibly good! It deals with a difficult topic, immigration, but I feel that it's important that more people read this book.

Absolutely loved this historical fiction. Was still thinking about it on Friday, so stopped by the Devon witches memorial at lunchtime.
Corrag tells her story from her prison cell, as she waits for the snow to melt, so she can face her execution for witchcraft. A lone young woman, skilled in herbs and healing, and with a love of wild places, she found her home in Glen Coe, not long before the massacre. Beautiful writing, and how hard it‘s been
1.5/5⭐ Almost everything in this book is so surface level as to be utterly useless, if not downright lacking vital important information (e.g. for herb use) or providing misinformation (e.g. re: smudging, citing flawed studies).
The summary emphasizes all garden space sizes, but the text focuses solely on large yards.
There are much better, more reliably informed books out there on all these topics. Give this one a pass.
Where do I begin to break down this mess? All these snippets are from THE SAME PAGE. The initial segue from the previous (unpictured) paragraph on using flames to pretending smoke is the same thing. The complete appropriation and downplay of the importance of smudging to Native Americans (SIMPLE RITUAL?!?!?!). (continued in comments)
This year I set my book goal to 100. The past few years I‘ve been getting 80-85, but I figure if I spend less time zoning out on my phone and more time reading, I can easily hit 100. January is off to a good start, with many of these being books that had already been started and never finished or on my TBR forever.
This one really surprised me! I didn't expect to enjoy this so much but #Sanctuary had me hooked from the start and kept me up way past my bedtime. Dealing with some dark themes (e.g. rape, victim blaming), this book was hard to read at times but it's a real page-turner. The murder mystery with all its twists and turns was so well plotted and the setting was incredibly atmospheric. I also loved the diverse cast of characters and the magic element.
This book taught me so much, and at the same time made me mad as hell. I had no idea that being "illegal" was a concept not created the way it's seen today until the 1960s. Chomsky (yes, she is Noam's daughter)explains so clearly how the system is rigged so that we all profit from the work of the undocumented while shaking our heads and yelling about how they're taking our jobs, when actually no one will take the jobs they do. #audiobook on#scribd
