Dear White Peacemakers
Dear White Peacemakers: Dismantling Racism with Grit and Grace | Osheta Moore
7 posts | 2 read | 7 to read
Dear White Peacemakers is a breakup letter to division, a love letter to God's beloved community, and an eviction notice to the violent powers that have sustained racism for centuries. Race is one of the hardest topics to discuss in America. Many white Christians, fearing hurt feelings, misunderstanding, and anger, avoid talking about it altogether. But everything we know about overturning racism relies on white people becoming aware and engaging in change. Dear White Peacemakers is an encouraging and thoughtful guide for white Christian peacemakers on the journey to racial justice, gently pointing out blinds spots and reminding such readers that they have a vital part in this hard work and holy calling. Based in the Sermon on the Mount, this book offers everyday practices for transforming white shame, fragility, saviorism, and privilege and for building beloved community as an anti-racist peacemaker. Author Osheta Moore is a trusted leader for peacemakers and racial justice and also a Black pastor in an interracial marriage who has served predominantly white congregations for over ten years.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️This is the second time I‘ve read through Moore‘s book, and reading through it with a group was valuable. Having her voice in my head as she speaks with the Spirit has helped me live with grit and grace. Seeing the humanity & the image of God in others and telling better stories about people I don‘t understand is difficult work but has been an invaluable practice. If you are a Christian, this needs to be on your short list.

Back in March I read the tagged book,& it was like she flipped a switch on how I approached antiracism &just loving and knowing people in general. I wanted to find a way to memorialize everything I learned while reading her book: to continue learning, to engage with people one on one over coffee, to approach antiracism work with equal parts grit&grace. I am thrilled with this artwork&the way I will be able to take these lessons with me everywhere.

I‘m finding right now that reading electronically or listening to audiobooks is by far easiest. I adore the feel of a paper book and when on holiday that‘s my go to, for sure. But everyday life is so hard right now, being able to read with less mental pressure (I‘m just on my phone!) is tricking me in a good way.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Osheta tells us we need to engage with each other‘s stories with “curiosity and mercy.”She says that we have to start with Belovedness as our base. That we must own our Belovedness, and that must then overflow into the Belovedness of everyone else. We must approach this important, Godly work with equal parts Grit & Grace. Too far in either direction, and we cannot effectively be the Peacemakers we are called to be. Highly recommend!

behudd @EmmaMae I finished it this afternoon! 4y

This book is coming out in May but I have gotten the chance to read it early. It is so profound. Osheta invites us who are white into the role of peacemaker guided by her, a black woman. It is so good already - keep your eyes open for it.

behudd I‘m on the “launch team” too! I‘m still only about a quarter of the way through it, but I‘m loving it! 4y
EmmaMae @behudd So cool! I have been slow at reading it due to having a few other things on the go and having a newborn but I am loving it too! 4y
behudd @EmmaMae it‘s definitely one worth savoring! And one I know I will re-read. 4y
