Hummingbird's Daughter
Hummingbird's Daughter | Luis Alberto Urrea
The prizewinning writer Luis Alberto Urrea's long-awaited novel is an epic mystical drama of a young woman's sudden sainthood in late 19th-century Mexico. It is 1889, and civil war is brewing in Mexico. A 16-year-old girl, Teresita, illegitimate but beloved daughter of the wealthy and powerful rancher Don Tomas Urrea, wakes from the strangest dream--a dream that she has died. Only it was not a dream. This passionate and rebellious young woman has arisen from death with a power to heal--but it will take all her faith to endure the trials that await her and her family now that she has become the Saint of Cabora.THE HUMMINGBIRD?S DAUGHTER is a vast, hugely satisfying novel of love and loss, joy and pain. Two decades in the writing, this is the masterpiece that Luis Alberto Urrea has been building up to.

This book tells the story of Teresita, who as a young woman (really teen) in Mexico developed the ability to heal others in a miraculous way. While I enjoyed this, it was very slow to develop and I would not have stuck with it if I was not determined to read more Urrea. It‘s my least favorite of the books of his I‘ve read so far.

I enjoyed this. I adore Urrea, he reads the audio which is lovely. I half read half listened. There were some slow parts - middle-beginning and in the middle. I felt it got a bit bogged down, I found the story and Urrea's ties to it interesting and even read the extra bits at the end of his process in researching which I never do! I loved the father daughter relationship, rarely do you see such a kind and funny depiction in literature.

"Letting an orphan suffer is disgusting"

I love the relationship between Tomas and Teresita, it is complex and rich, and I love that they are so comfortable and funny with each other.

This section though when they are taking in and caring for a young orphan boy, I have never had lice but this chapter is making my head itch!! Urrea is a great writer.

JamieArc Love Urrea and this book ❤️ 3y

#julyjourneys #listeningday
I keep a pair of earbuds in my entry way so that each time I go for a walk, work on things outside, or run errands I can grab them and listen to a book. I have doubled the books I can get through in a year since I have gotten over the idea that audiobooks is not "reading" I have bad eyesight and attention issues, and I understand now that this idea is ableist and ridiculous! Not everyone can sit and read with their eyes

I somehow ended up with a zillion tomatoes, so I asked Nigella what to do and discovered this tomato-bacon hash recipe in FEAST. It‘s supposed to be hangover food, but it worked equally well as a sober accompaniment to THE HUMMINGBIRD‘S DAUGHTER.

Nute Yum! 4y
xicanti @Nute I‘m definitely making it again. 4y

Chard tart‘s mighty versatile. Have it for breakfast! Have it for dessert!

I‘m hoping to make THE HUMMINGBIRD‘S DAUGHTER stick tonight. It‘s been too long since I had a nice, big historical novel to devour.

JamieArc I really loved The Hummingbird‘s Daughter. Urrea is a beautiful writer ❤️ 4y
xicanti @JamieArc I loved his INTO THE BEAUTIFUL NORTH, and it feels like I could love this one, too. 4y

A wonderful book! The narration was a bit staccato, but I got used to it after a while. I‘m not sure I can blame it for my lack of focus, which sometimes caused me to miss rather significant events... still, a great listen!

This is the second time I‘ve read this book, a sort-of historical story of a Mexican girl that has magical healing powers. Terrific.

This was between so so and pick. Finding out in the epilogue that the story was based on a real figure but my opinion of it up a notch or two. A female catholic mystic 1880‘s Mexico. If even a small portion of the story is true, it‘s incredible.

I've been trying to read this for a week. And as lovely as the language & imagery is, it keeps putting me to sleep. I hope to get back to it someday. But for now it's a DNF for me😕

Loving this book already

Leelee.reads How did you end up liking this book? Would you recommend it? It's one of many on my TBR list, and wondering if I should give it a go. 8y
ConstantReader1 Ended up not finishing it. Found it jumped around too much. The language is beautiful, though, and I loved the magical elements. 8y
