The Opposite House
The Opposite House | Helen Oyeyemi
2 posts | 6 read | 9 to read
Maja was five years old when her black Cuban family emigrated from the Caribbean to London, leaving her with one complete memory: a woman singing - in a voice both eerie and enthralling - at their farewell party. Now, almost twenty years later, Maja herself is a singer, pregnant and haunted by what she calls 'her Cuba'.

Thats it for me tonight. Yesterday I read 12 hours but only 8 today. 20 hours for my first readathon is not bad!! I finished 3 books and made great headway on 2 more. I just started The Opposite House by Helen Oyeyemi. I am reading all of her work over this year. What a fun weekend this has been!

Pickpick

I love Helen Oyeyemi. Her work is so expressive of identity and place, so unsettling. I recently learned the German word unheimlich (loosely translated as uncanny) and it describes her work perfectly so it was interesting to see her use the same word in The Opposite House.

vivastory @Moray_Reads One of my 5 star books this month is Oyeyemi's "White is For Witching." 8y
Moray_Reads Loved that one too. I think my favourite is Icarus Girl but they're all amazing 8y
