Some Kind of Fairy Tale
Some Kind of Fairy Tale: A Novel | Graham Joyce
Acclaimed author Graham Joyce's mesmerizing new novel centers around the disappearance of a young girl from a small town in the heart of England. Her sudden return twenty years later, and the mind-bending tale of where she's been, will challenge our very perception of truth. For twenty years after Tara Martin disappeared from her small English town, her parents and her brother, Peter, have lived in denial of the grim fact that she was gone for good. And then suddenly, on Christmas Day, the doorbell rings at her parents' home and there, disheveled and slightly peculiar looking, Tara stands. It's a miracle, but alarm bells are ringing for Peter. Tara's story just does not add up. And, incredibly, she barely looks a day older than when she vanished. Award-winning author Graham Joyce is a master of exploring new realms of understanding that exist between dreams and reality, between the known and unknown. Some Kind of Fairy Tale is a unique journey every bit as magical as its title implies, and as real and unsentimental as the world around us.

I would have preferred it if the ambiguity was still there as to whether the fairytale was real or not. Having the old lady say that it happened to her sort or confirmed it to me. I liked the psychological aspect and think it would have been better to have turned out to be a psychological issue than true. It reminded me of Life or Pi.

Guildedearlobe I love this book. His books are always beautiful and thought provoking. I was heartbroken when he died. 6y

This novel was on Holly Black‘s list (published on Tor.com?) of good contemporary fairy stories. A 16 year old girl, Tara, goes missing, comes back 20 years later, but for her, it‘s only been 6 months. I liked the meditation on our reliance on context and the continuity of daily life to make sense of each other. When Tara comes back, she struggles to find her parents, brother, and first love in the people they‘ve become over the past 20 years.

Zelma That sounds really good! 6y
vkois88 I'm gonna have to look up that list! She is surely becoming an author whose opinion is one I'd love to have! 6y

This #supernaturalmystery involves the disappearance of a teenage girl in the woodlands near her home. Twenty years later she reappears at her family home un-aged and claims she was taken away by fairies. In some ways this book felt like a very depressing look at aging, especially from the perspective of Tara.

Great listen, John Lee is one of my favorite narrators. His voice is swoon-worthy. The story was good, though I doubt I would have liked it as much if I'd read it. There wasn't really any...mystery or urgency to the story. It was interesting enough for me to stick it out though. Recommend if you need an easy listen and want to lose yourself in Mr. Lee's dulcet tones. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Lindy What? No mystery? She shows up at her parents door many years after she disappeared, but she doesn't look like she has aged. Isn't that mysterious? 8y
Owlizabeth @Lindy She tells what happened pretty early on in the book... 8y
Lindy Did you believe her story? Is she mentally ill? I saw this novel as domestic drama with fantastical elements. Loved that its questions didn't have answers. 8y

Loved this book, it led you through the eyes of a family that has lost someone to the fay. We always have the adventures with someone who has gotten captured, this one has a big twist. Really moving. Read this years ago and is in my top 10. I still remember the characters like I just finished.
