Three Mothers: How the Mothers of Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, and James Baldwin Shaped a Nation
Three Mothers: How the Mothers of Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, and James Baldwin Shaped a Nation | Anna Malaika Tubbs
12 posts | 10 read | 23 to read
Much has been written about Berdis Baldwin's son James, about Alberta King's son Martin Luther, and Louise Little's son Malcolm. But virtually nothing has been said about the extraordinary women who raised them. In her groundbreaking and essential debut The Three Mothers, scholar Anna Malaika Tubbs celebrates Black motherhood by telling the story of the three women who raised and shaped some of America's most pivotal heroes. One of Fortune Magazine's 21 Books to Look Foward to in 2021 Badass Women's Bookclub pick for Badass Books We Can't Wait to Read in 2021! Berdis Baldwin, Alberta King, and Louise Little were all born at the beginning of the 20th century and forced to contend with the prejudices of Jim Crow as Black women. These three extraordinary women passed their knowledge to their children with the hope of helping them to survive in a society that would deny their humanity from the very beginning--from Louise teaching her children about their activist roots, to Berdis encouraging James to express himself through writing, to Alberta basing all of her lessons in faith and social justice. These women used their strength and motherhood to push their children toward greatness, all with a conviction that every human being deserves dignity and respect despite the rampant discrimination they faced. These three mothers taught resistance and a fundamental belief in the worth of Black people to their sons, even when these beliefs flew in the face of America's racist practices and led to ramifications for all three families' safety. The fight for equal justice and dignity came above all else for the three mothers. These women, their similarities and differences, as individuals and as mothers, represent a piece of history left untold and a celebration of Black motherhood long overdue.

This book started as a great idea. Studying the mothers of Martin Luther King, Jr., James Baldwin, and Malcolm X is a great idea. Behind every great man is a great woman, right? However, I think Tubbs took on more than she could deliver. A pet peeve was that she referred to each woman only by their first name. I spent 3/4s of the audiobook trying to remember which mother she was referring to. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I learned a few things but knew a lot already.

DocBrown I found this book fascinating! I had no idea that Alberta King was assassinated in church! 10mo
Suet624 @DocBrown I think this is an important book and hopefully people will read it. I just didn‘t like the way it was written. 🥴 Those mothers were so courageous, so loving, and so disregarded. The fear they lived with, fear for their children, was so sad. I‘ve read some other bios so I knew about Alberta. Wasn‘t that awful? (edited) 10mo

The mothers of Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, and James Baldwin are very worthy subjects for a book. I think the scope of this was maybe a little too ambitious as it covers all three women, as well as the greater context of Black women in U.S. history and the role of Black mothers. I learned a lot and really appreciate the author‘s effort to pull their stories from the margins of history. I‘d like to read more about them.

An in-depth look at the influential Mothers of contemporary men who shifted the world‘s view of black America. Much of this history has been lost so the meticulous research and careful crafting of the stories of each of these women is astounding. We‘ll done!

Having a hard time finding audiobooks that hold my interest lately. I enjoyed parts of this book, but I felt like a lot of it was filler. The last 45 min was unnecessary, imo. I think the author was giving historical context, but she wrote a lot about other events besides what the title implies. Prob not enough info for a whole book about the mothers, but those are the parts I enjoyed. Giving it a pick because I did like it until the conclusion.

Finished this bookclub pick this morning. Such a great read. I‘ve never thought much about the mothers of these Civil Rights leaders which is exactly why the world needs this book. I enjoyed reading about their life stories and how they influenced their sons. Highly recommend. 5⭐️

This book focuses on the lives of Alberta King, Louise Little, and Berdis Baldwin, but the author weaves in quite a bit of African American history along the way in a fairly short listen. I genuinely appreciated learning more about the lives of these women and how they influenced their sons. #nonfiction

This was another great freebie from Libro.fm‘s ALC* program for educators. In telling the stories of Berdis Baldwin, Alberta King, and Louise Little, Tubbs paints a broader picture of Black women‘s experiences in the 1920‘s & 30‘s as mothers and community organizers.

This book will be released in Feb and sounds exactly like a book a want to read. This article shares a vital perspective and understanding of MLK and civil rights. I remember the first time we honored MLK with a National day. https://www.benjerry.com/whats-new/2021/01/relevant-mlk-quotes
