Greetings from New Nashville
Greetings from New Nashville: How a Sleepy Southern Town Became "It" City | Steve Haruch
1 post | 1 read | 4 to read
In 1998, roughly 2 million visitors came to see what there was to see in Nashville. By 2018, that number had ballooned to 15.2 million. In that span of two decades, the boundaries of Nashville did not change. But something did. Or rather, many somethings changed, and kept changing, until many who lived in Nashville began to feel they no longer recognized their own city. And some began to feel it wasn't their own city at all anymore as they were pushed to its fringes by rising housing costs. Between 1998 and 2018, the population of Nashville grew by 150,000. On some level, Nashville has always packaged itself for consumption, but something clicked and suddenly everyone wanted a taste. But why Nashville? Why now? What made all this change possible? This book is an attempt to understand those transformations, or, if not to understand them, exactly, then to at least grapple with the question: What happened?

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Writer/editor Steve Haruch compiled these essays and articles by local writers - Ann Patchett, Margaret Renkl, Ben Folds, etc - to articulate Music City‘s rapid change over two decades. There‘s a bit of repetition, but that doesn‘t take away from the points: intense gentrification, lack of affordable housing, metro school segregation, police, politics, pro sports, tech, hot chicken, and yeah, music. The good, the bad, and the inevitable.

Booksnchill And no mail when it snows??? 3y
Cinfhen Look at the snow ⛄️ I‘d love to spend some time in New/Old Nashville 💖 3y
britt_brooke @Booksnchill I was actually shocked that ours ran today, but it was the first time this week. Still none for you? 3y

britt_brooke @Cinfhen It‘s a great city, but flawed (like most). If you ever get down/over this way, holler! 😉 3y
Booksnchill @britt_brooke none and I don‘t hold out hope for trash pickup tomorrow 3y
britt_brooke @Booksnchill Dang. Yeah, we‘ve already been told no trash pickup this week. And trash is already a hot topic up here since the city went cheap on the new contract. 🙄 3y
HeatherBookNerd Sounds they summed it up! 3y
mom2bugnbee We had mail on Tuesday, but not since then, & I have no idea if trash pickup will happen this week. Was supposed to be today, bt 3y
mom2bugnbee *but 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3y
britt_brooke @mom2bugnbee 😂 Just gotta roll with it. Everything is so wonky right now. 3y
britt_brooke @HeatherBookNerd Yes! And it‘s a good read, but a bit of a slog. Definitely one to dip in and out of which I struggle doing. 😂 3y
SaturnDoo @britt_brooke @mom2bugnbee we haven't had mail delivery since Saturday and our trash pickup was supposed to be Tuesday. We went online to the city website and it will next week and extra bags will be allowed at no extra charge 🤣 3y
SaturnDoo @Booksnchill we won't have trash pickuo until next week. 🤪 no mail, grocery stores opening late, closing early. No doordash cause all fast food is closed 🤣 the joys of getting lots of ice for 3-4days, and then a big dump of snow. 3y
SaturnDoo @Cinfhen I'm not in Nashville but just a short 15-20 min drive from it. If you get to come visit, have loads of fun and enjoy!!! There's lots of beautiful suburbs and other nearby cities that are great!!! 3y
britt_brooke @SaturnDoo I swear, Tennessee cannot function in winter weather. 😂 I‘ve lived in a few cold weather places (CO, UT, WI) and this always cracks me up. Everything is a total crap shoot. Good luck down your way. Hoping it all clears up this weekend.🤞🏻 3y
SaturnDoo @britt_brooke LOL IKR!!! It's been this way all my life. I think it's because TN rarely gets hit with a lot of snow/ice so the state just isn't prepared for it.TN is prepared for small minor ice/snow storms but not the BIG ones that last more than a day or two. So when a major storm comes through like now, here we are unprepared and everyone and everything shut down. I lived in NE a short time and nothing shuts down. 3y
Cinfhen Hi @SaturnDoo long time no see.....hope all is well xx I can‘t wait for the world to return to normal and hopefully I can start traveling again 🥳if I‘m ever in town you know I‘m organizing a southern meet-up 💚💚 3y
britt_brooke @SaturnDoo Yep! I grew up in Kentucky and it‘s pretty much the same there. It was fun as a kid waking up to see if a dusting of snow would cancel school. 😂 3y
