Nubia: Real One

Can you be a hero...if society doesn't trust you as a person? Nubia has always been a little bit...different. As a baby she showcased Amazonian-like strength by pushing over a tree to rescue her neighbor's cat. But Nubia's no Wonder Woman, she couldn't even be one if she tried. And she has tried. Every time she comes to the rescue, she's the one who needs saving. Her moms do their best to keep her safe, but Nubia can't deny the fire within her, even if she's a little awkward about it sometimes. When Nubia's best friend, Quisha, is threatened by a boy who thinks he owns the town, Nubia will risk it all--her safety, her home, and her crush on that cute kid in English class--to become the hero society tells her she isn't. From the witty and powerful voice behind A Blade So Black and with endearing and expressive art by Robyn Smith, comes a vital story for today about equality, identity and kicking it with your squad.

Phenomenal Story had just about everything. Nubia‘s story was well written about her overpowering drive to help people. Even though it always gets her I‘m so much trouble. Especially when she‘s dark skinned. This story is so emotional with a young lady wanting to do good in a world that doesn‘t seem to believe it‘s possible. feel this greatly. Love how she goes with her friends to protest. Such supportive friends.

A student of mine recommended this one, and I can‘t wait to discuss it with them this week! The artist‘s interpretation of Wonder Woman style for Nubia was beautiful.

I'm on a huge library graphic novel binge (in between reading Ice Planet Barbarians, don't judge me).

Just borrowed this one.

On my hook : it will just look like a crumpled mess until it's blocked, but this is the yoke of a lace Sarah Cardigan, in Malabrigo Sock, colourway Archangel.

BookishMadHatter I bow down to your superior crocheting patience. I can't handle sock weight yarn lol 2y

Although serious topics are covered, this was a fun read. A unique way to introduce topics of domestic violence, racial injustice, police violence, self identity, coming of age/rites of passage.

Nubia‘s a teen who just wants to fit in. She‘s got strange powers that sometimes get her into trouble. Interesting back story on how she meets Wonder Woman and learns who she really is. Liked her determination to do what‘s right and defend others, even when it backfires. When things get dangerous, she risks it all to help. Looking forward to see what happens next.
