The Rebel Nun
The Rebel Nun | Marj Charlier

Marj Charliers The Rebel Nun is based on the true story of Clotild, the daughter of a sixth-century king and his concubine, who leads a rebellion of nuns against the rising misogyny and patriarchy of the medieval church. At that time, women are afforded few choices in life: prostitution, motherhood, or the cloister. Only the latter offers them any kind of independence. By the end of the sixth century, even this is eroding as the church begins to eject women from the clergy and declares them too unclean to touch sacramental objects or even their priest-husbands. Craving the legitimacy thwarted by her bastard status, Clotild seeks to become the next abbess of the female Monastery of the Holy Cross, the most famous of the womens cloisters of the early Middle Ages. When the bishop of Poitiers blocks her appointment and seeks to control the nunnery himself, Clotild masterminds an escape, leading a group of nuns on a dangerous pilgrimage to beg her royal relatives to intercede on their behalf. But the bishop refuses to back down, and a bloody battle ensues. Will Clotild and her sisters succeed with their quest, or will they face excommunication, possibly even death? In the only historical novel written about the incident, The Rebel Nun is a richly imagined story about a truly remarkable heroine.

Medieval historical fiction imagining why the infamous nun uprising of The Holy Cross in 589 might have taken place. Sister Clotilda leads a group of nuns to sanctuary when the newly appointed (not elected, as was usual) abbess grows abusive with power. Increasing limits on women in the Church makes this difficult. A fascinating read with more likely answers than given by men of the day.

Based on the skeletal facts of a convent rebellion during the Middle Ages, Charlier conveys just how precarious women‘s positions were and how few their choices. Many a woman entered religious life out of necessity and not by calling.

This book may be offensive to some as both the Church and Christianity are not painted in a glowing light. (Not to mention men!)

Despite the heat advisory, I‘m outside enjoying one of my cherished reading times of the day. 😎 Happy Hour!

Really enjoying this book so far, but I‘m not too far in. Hoping it doesn‘t get too political because I can‘t keep all the names and motives straight.

Cathythoughts The Happy Hour read 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 I may have to take this idea onboard 👍🏻 🥂 3y

A slower-paced Medieval story (6th century). The author presents a real woman in history, Clotild, who was born to a King and a peasant. Her status meant she would never be recognized as full royalty, and she was sent to be a nun for her own safety. She and other nuns staged a rebellion to try and change their dismal conditions. The dark, cold, miserable convent came alive to me while I was reading. The Author‘s Note is particularly fascinating.

Clotild‘s family tree at the beginning of The Rebel Nun is so beautifully done!!

There is also a beautiful #bookmap of the Kingdom of the Franks. The book is set in the 500-600‘s.
