Josephine sat on Mama‘s knee and sponged up that funky music through her ears, her body. Her SOUL.
I liked the illustrations in this book! They were very colorful and fun and flowed well with the movement and presentation of the words.
Biography about Josephine Baker. Josephine Baker was the first black woman to star in a major motion picture. She was a dancer and loved to perform. It goes through the different challenges she faced to show the world her vibrant and passionate gift.
I really enjoyed this picture book in verse (which I'll add book info for soon). It covers the life of Josephine Baker as she broke into showbiz, went to France to escape segregated performance spaces, became super famous, and started the Rainbow Tribe. (Thanks to this book, I also noticed a nod to Kosephine during a recent rewatch of the animated Anastasia movie!). #NonFiction #PictureBook
Kids need more stories like this. What an amazing life Josephine Baker led. I‘m intrigued to learn more.
Review: Josephine by Patricia Powell, 2014, is a biography about performer and civil rights advocate Josephine Baker. It was well researched by the author and illustrator
Blurb: This is a great example of the genre because it tells the true story of a real person, and it uses real quotes that came from the main character that flow and fit into the storyline.
Quote: “Josephine-born poor, out of wedlock in honky-tonk town.“
This biography book is good because it accurately portrays Josephine's life and its background becomes told through the story. Its authentic in its writing and the illustrations help reveal themes throughout the book. I believe its a fast moving narrative that also keeps the readers involved and engaged!
This book would be great for kids in early childhood classrooms. I think they would find it enjoyable and i also believe the message is strong and empowering! The biography shows a large span of Josephine's life and gives light into everything that happened!
“Improvised, crazed with the music. Even my teeth and eyes burned with fever. I leapt to touch the sky. When I regained earth it was mine alone.“
I would consider using this book in my classroom however it was pretty long so I'm not sure if the kids would be willing to pay and keep their attention on the book but it may spark interest in some of the kids.
Josephine: The Dazzling Life of Josephine Baker written by Patricia Hruby Powell. About the timeline of the course of Josephine's personal life and career as a dancer. Certain words have different fonts which seem to emphasize or exaggerate the meaning, such as POP! in all caps.
“The chorus of frenzied dancers joined her.“
This book would be great for 2nd and 3rd graders. It's a longer book so it would be better for older elementary kids to read. The pages are longer so it would be easier for 2nd and 3rd graders to understand what is going on.
This is a nonfiction book. The text in this book is definitely appropriate for an intended audience because the words are presented clearly and a good size for students to read. The language is also very vivid and interesting because it's on different colors of papers and the words are placed in odd spots.
“Cross your heart... swear you won‘t tell Mama... I‘m leavin‘ with the show...”

Josephine is a performer and civil rights advocate. She started in St. Louis‘s dumps and made it to the biggest stages in the world.
“She strode down the Champs-èlysees, the heart of Paris, with her leopard, Chiquita, each wearing a diamond chocked as regal as a queen by day as wild as a leopard by night.”
