I loved this book in high school and decided to reread it in college. The amount of politics in this book that I didn‘t notice before is unreal. This HF chapter book written by Lauren Tarshis takes place during WWII. This young boys village is taken over by Nazi‘s and his Jewish best friend has disappeared. Read the story to find out what he does and what his village goes through.
This would be an excellent novel for IR for your students. Once they start the book they won‘t want to put it down!

Macker11 I think these books are a great way to get kids interested in history! They have an intriguing way to express the historical event and make it interesting for kids. The students read it as a chapter book and they don‘t even realize they are actually learning! definitely a good read! 5y

This RF novel written by R.J. Palacio tells a story about a boy named Auggie who doesn‘t look exactly like the average student in your classroom. The students at his new school must learn to accept others for who they are, not what they look like. This novel challenges students to “choose kind”, a concept brought to the students by their teacher.

My Brother Sam Is Dead | James Lincoln Collier

In fifth grade, I absolutely loved this story! The Newbery Honor is about a young boy name Tim Meeker whose brother Sam enlists in the new American Revolutionary Army. What Tim didn‘t realize was that his brother and father would end up rooting for opposing teams, Tim is torn between who to support. This HF novel is perfect for LC for students in 5th-7th grade. #ucflae3414su19
