This HF chapter book written by Lauren Tarshis takes place during WWII. This young boys village is taken over by Nazi‘s and his Jewish best friend has disappeared. Read the story to find out what he does and what his village goes through.
This would be an excellent novel for IR for your students. Once they start the book they won‘t want to put it down!
UDL Principle: 7.1
ESOL Strategy: 29

DezireeLara For the students who don‘t want to read the actual book they can listen to the audio version! https://www.audible.com/author/Lauren-Tarshis/B001JRRKRE 5mo
Macker11 I think these books are a great way to get kids interested in history! They have an intriguing way to express the historical event and make it interesting for kids. The students read it as a chapter book and they don‘t even realize they are actually learning! definitely a good read! 5mo
DrSpalding I really like the idea of audiobooks. Excellent to include this link. I agree, third, fourth and possibly lower level fifth graders will enjoy this series and hopefully not want to put it down. 4mo

This RF picture book is written and illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds. It tells a story about a little boy who collects words (surprise!) and what his journey as a world collector entails.
http://www.theclassroombookshelf.com/2018/03/the-word-collector/ this link has some fun teaching ideas if you plan on using it as a RA!
UDL Principle 2.1 clarify vocabulary and symbols
ESOL strategy 11 and 12 can be satisfied because of the different...

DezireeLara ...vocabulary used throughout the text. With ESOL students a word wall or pictures with definitions could be helpful for clarifying the vocabulary. 5mo

Wonder | R. J. Palacio
post image
Pickpick

This RF novel written by R.J. Palacio tells a story about a boy named Auggie who doesn‘t look exactly like the average student in your classroom. The students at his new school must learn to accept others for who they are, not what they look like. This novel challenges students to “choose kind”, a concept brought to the students by their teacher.
https://anneumonic.wordpress.com/2015/02/24/lit-circle-journal-wonder-by-r-j-pal...

DezireeLara The link takes you to discussion questions that can be used in the classroom for the students when they meet in LCs. UDL Principle 2.4 can be used for this novel, the students can read the book in LCs and then watch the movie at the end to see the adaptation of the film. A great idea for after can be a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the novel to the film. ESOL strategy that can be used it small groups to discuss the novel. #ucflae3414su19 5mo
alexialovesmith I‘m reading this book for the independent read assignment! I love it so far. I love your idea about using a vent diagram to compare and contrast the movie and the book. Watching the movie after reading the book is an excellent idea as well. Great post! 5mo

The prestige Shel Silverstein is know for his poems and artwork that‘s associated with each poem. Silverstein is a great author to use for an AS. The amount of books and poems he has written for children can be researched by the students.
#ucflae3414su19
http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/calendar-activities/where-side... This link gives resources for the teacher on the author and on the book.

DezireeLara UDL Principle 6.2 on planning and development can be used for the steps that each student must complete during the AS. ESOL strategy 15 will be important for these students, repetition will be key for these students on learning the material and presenting facts in their AS. 5mo

In fifth grade, I absolutely loved this story! The Newbery Honor is about a young boy name Tim Meeker whose brother Sam enlists in the new American Revolutionary Army. What Tim didn‘t realize was that his brother and father would end up rooting for opposing teams, Tim is torn between who to support. This HF novel is perfect for LC for students in 5th-7th grade. #ucflae3414su19

DezireeLara https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/my-brother-sam... this scholastic resource gives great guided reading questions for the class. UDL Principle 6.3 facilitate managing information and resources can be satisfied by facilitating questions for the class. ESOL strategy 22, giving enough wait time for second language learners to respond to questions can be used during the guided reading discussion. 5mo
DrSpalding Excellent resource for a wonderful book to include well teaching fifth grade social studies. The American revolution is a big unit! This could be a literature circle option while learning about this very famous war. 4mo

This Caldecott Medal is a hilarious story about farm animals that have a typewriter and leave notes for the farmer. Doreen Cronin writes a F story perfect for RA. #ucflae3414su19
https://www.the-best-childrens-books.org/Click-Clack-Moo-Cows-That-Type.html is resourceful for teachers who want to know more about the story, find activities for your classroom around the text, and preview a sample of the book.

DezireeLara UDL Principle 3.1, activate or supply background knowledge can be done through an activity around farm animals with the student, prior to reading the story. An ESOL strategy for this RA can be contextual support through audio or videos. The class can do a RT and act out the characters in the story. It‘s a short story that students would enjoy! 5mo

In this Caldecott Award Winner, Maurice Sendak writes a story about a little boy who rules the wild things. The imagination of a boy can go beyond the walls of his bedroom, read to find out where Max goes. This fictional story is a great read aloud for your classroom. https://www.weareteachers.com/where-the-wild-things-are-activities/ in this link you can find crafts that can be done with your classroom.

DezireeLara An ESOL strategy that can be satisfied is having hands-on-activities in the classroom. ESOL students may have the language barrier but drawings and crafts are a universal language for our students. The UDL Principle that I would use it 5.2, using multiple tools for construction and composition. #ucflae3414su19 5mo
