August, 1911: The Mona Lisa is stolen by Vincent Peruggia. Exactly what happens in the two years before its recovery is a mystery. Many replicas of the Mona Lisa exist, and more than one historian has wondered if the painting now in the Louvre is a fake, switched in 1911. Present day: art professor Luke Perrone digs for the truth behind his most famous ancestor: Peruggia. His search attracts an Interpol detective with something to prove and an unfamiliar but curiously helpful woman. Soon, Luke tumbles deep into the world of art and forgery, a land of obsession and danger. A gripping novel exploring the 1911 theft and the present underbelly of the art world, The Last Mona Lisais a suspenseful tale, tapping into our universal fascination with da Vinci's enigma, why people are driven to possess certain works of art, and our fascination with the authentic and the fake.

Well, I finished it,but not in time for Book Club. I did not know that the Mona Lisa was stolen from the Louvre in 1911.The book follows the great grandson of the thief as he travels to Paris to find the journal that will reveal the details of the heist. Two timelines: the present and the early 1900‘s.Insight into the art world and forgery. Fast paced. Interesting aside:the author attended a Litsy Book Club Zoom discussion of his book 2 years ago.

A fun mystery/thriller based on the true story of the 1911 Mona Lisa theft from the Louvre by Vincent Perruggia. Fictional premise has Luke Perrone seeking the truth behind his great-grandfather‘s crime. Well crafted alternative timelines. Lots of details about the art world, with characters who have their own agendas. Mainly, we‘re investigating who now owns the real da Vinci masterpiece.

⭐️⭐️💫

Steeped in art history and action, this mystery reimagines what could have happened in the real-life theft of the Mona Lisa. The writing style wasn‘t necessarily my cup of tea, but it was a quick read.

Based on real events this was a fast read which was fun in the moment—it‘s a perfect distraction for a flight or day at the beach/pool—but is one that probably won‘t linger too long in my mind. Artist and professor Luke Perrone has long been fascinated by the story of his great-grandfather who once stole the Mona Lisa. When he goes searching for the truth of what happened, there‘s all sorts of trouble. As I said, fun but not terribly memorable.
