The Secret Garden
The Secret Garden: A Graphic Novel | Mariah Marsden, Luechtefeld
9 posts | 9 read | 1 to read
Green-growing secrets and powerful magic await you at Misselthwaite Manor, now reimagined in this bewitching graphic novel adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s beloved tale. From Mariah Marsden, author of the critically acclaimed Anne of Green Gables: A Graphic Novel, comes the second installment in this series of retold children's classics.
Ten-year-old Mary Lennox arrives at a secluded estate on the Yorkshire moors with a scowl and a chip on her shoulder. First, there’s Martha Sowerby: the too-cheery maid with bothersome questions who seems out of place in the dreary manor. Then there’s the elusive Uncle Craven, Mary’s only remaining family—whom she’s not permitted to see. And finally, there are the mysteries that seem to haunt the run-down place: rumors of a lost garden with a tragic past, and a midnight wail that echoes across the moors at night.

As Mary begins to explore this new world alongside her ragtag companions—a cocky robin redbreast, a sour-faced gardener, and a boy who can talk to animals—she learns that even the loneliest of hearts can grow roots in rocky soil.
Given new life as a graphic novel in illustrator Hanna Luechtefeld's whimsical style, The Secret Garden is more enchanting and relevant than ever before. At the back of the book, readers can learn about the life of Frances Hodgson Burnett and the history of British colonialism that contextualizes the original novel.

A lesson for this book could be comparing the graphic novel with the original story. You could see if if there are any differences or similarities throughout and write about them.

Week 3: Graphia. this book has beautiful illustrations with pastel colors. This is also true to the original story since it was made into a graphic novel. Super great plot and could be engaging for students.

If I could pinpoint one book that proved to me that books were magic as a child. It would be The Secret Garden by Frances Hogdson Burnett. This story has and will always be magic.

Reading a graphic novel adaptation took me back to being 11 years old, racing through the pages of the original. I highly recommend for anyone who struggles with longer stories, as this gives you the story in a much more condensed version.

I enjoyed the art style, especially the coloring, but overall this didn‘t capture the magic of the original for me. #MoreMehThanYeah #MiddleGradeMarch #BirthdayPixieReadathon @megnews @sblbooks @Lizpixie

The illustrations are absolutely beautiful! I grew up watching a movie adaptation, and read the book a few years ago. This is a fun, but in places distressing story. This beautiful adaptation does a fairly good job, but occasionally the pannel order is super confusing or the flow of action doesn't quite make sense like when the girl sees the branches that indicate there might be a hidden garden. #Comic #Adaptation #Classic

Not to be a buzzkill, but you most certainly did not! You just walked down a path and saw a bird singing, then told the gardener this. The pacing in this graphic novel is a bit weird 😅 #Comic #Adaptation

IndoorDame That would drive me crazy! And I had such high hopes for this. 2y
Kenyazero @IndoorDame It's really pretty so far! Sometimes you have to infer a little based on prior knowledge of the book, though, which is a bit disappointing. 2y

It‘s thinner than the original, but captures the heart of the story. Mary looks so cross at the beginning! This skips the colonial India introduction (with a good note at the end about why) and starts with Mary‘s arrival at Misselthwaite Manor. Kiddo enjoyed it, too.

This was a lovely graphic novel from #netgalley. I've never read The Secret Garden, but the movie was a big part of my childhood; I loved getting to revisit the world, especially with the phenomenal illustrations by Hanna Luechtefeld. It was moody and moving, exactly the escape I was looking for. A perfect intro to the classics for your kids, but I'd recommend it for the adults too! 🌱💕

tpixie This is one of my favorite books growing up. The illustration that cover is gorgeous! 4y
Linsy @tpixie Right??! I really need to make time to read the original sometime soon. The art is just as gorgeous all the way through. I love this artist so much! 💕 4y
tpixie @Linsy I‘ll need to keep a look out for it! 4y
