Today marks 4 years of reading books mostly by but also about #JRRTolkien with my #FellowshipOfTolkien friends! We‘ve read more slowly in the last year with more breaks between books, but we‘re continuing to read and discuss. Altogether we‘ve read the 24 different books on the left with some rereads and completed the bottom 4 in the past year. I‘ve also read the 8 on the right alongside, and we‘re starting The Story of Kullervo together today.

I totally loved it!
So much information, so many beautiful pictures, but above all, so many new angles to subjects l thought l knew - and knew what they were all about.

Garth has this beautiful gift to be able to see the bigger picture and read new ways in old material.
He had a lot to tell in this book, but he also offered the vision of other Tolkien scholars.

A very enriching read.

I read a lot more than I expected in June thanks to a lot of audio time early in the month, and there are some great books on this list! My overall favorites were the tagged Worlds of J.R.R. Tolkien and Mythos.

This book was fantastic and packed full of fascinating information. It discusses real and literary places that inspired J.R.R. Tolkien‘s writing and includes some of his own illustrations as well as other art and photographs. I highly recommend this book for fans of The Hobbit & Lord of the Rings who want to dig a bit deeper.

This morning I finished the chapter “Watch and Ward” and this evening I started “Places of War.” The descriptions are always interesting, but I especially appreciate the photos and illustrations that provide a visual of places that may have inspired Tolkien‘s writing. It‘s all fascinating!

BLT salad for supper, Eleanor for company, and the beginning of another chapter make for a lovely evening. I think I‘ve always imagined and connected with Tolkien‘s forests the best because they‘re the easiest for me to visualize. I‘m enjoying learning about literary and real world inspirations for these places.

That truly is a line that always makes me sad. The majestic Sirion is so much more than just a river in Middle-earth.

I made a little time for supper and a book this evening. This chapter referencing Tolkien‘s writing about the sea is incredibly interesting. I‘m especially intrigued by the specific details of his time, like seeing Venus in the night sky over the Cornish coast and hearing about the polar explorations of Shackleton and others, that may have made their way into his writing.

There‘s a little bit about our next official group read, The Story of Kullervo, in the chapter I‘m currently reading. I am fascinated by the discussion of all the possible influences and inspirations on Tolkien‘s work.

Let's read some more 😊

I had lunch outside and started this beautiful book! The first chapter discusses areas of England, especially from Tolkien‘s childhood, and some other places that possibly provided inspiration for aspects of the Shire in his writing. Some connections are based on Tolkien‘s own words and places of residence while others are somewhat more hypothetical (and stated as such).

The #FellowshipOfTolkien will resume reading together on our fourth annyversary, 18 July, with The Story of Kullervo.

In the meanwhile, some of us thought to read the waiting away with Garth's The World of JRR Tolkien, and a veeeeeery easy schedule. Just to keep the flow, you know.

Our next planned #FellowshipOfTolkien read is going to be The Story of Kullervo this summer, but in the meantime @JazzFeathers and I are planning to read this beautiful book by John Garth. We‘re considering a few pages a day through May and June. If anyone else is interested in joining, let us know.
