(2021) It's a novella set aboard a ship of climate refugees whose homes were lost to conflict and rising sea levels. One passenger, Iroxi, is pregnant and near term which is unusual because no other pregnancy on board has been successfully brought to term. But Iraxi is a misfit: angry, resentful, and convinced that something is not right.

It's a surreal piece of social and environmental horror wrapped in a body-horror aesthetic. It worked for me.

A 104 page horror/ sci-fi novella. Mostly about the birth aboard a ship rather like Noah‘s ark, but with only people onboard after the world has flooded. It‘s pretty gory, there are doubts that the child will survive, and the main character is shunned by the rest of the crew. Grim, dark, and supernatural, it had a Cthulhu feel for me.

A fantasy horror about a kingdom trying to survive at sea after escaping a biblical like flood. Emotional, descriptive, and atmospheric, perfect for those that enjoy a more literary writing style. Readers will want to read lines and whole passages repeatedly. The third act turn will leave some scratching their head questioning what just happened. Whether that is good or bad depends on the reader.

Flowers for the Sea by Zin E. Rocklyn is a unique story of love, fire, and anger. Prepare yourselves for this tale before diving in; embers of anger will ignite in you and build to a roaring fire of rage.

A must-read. This one made me quite uncomfortable, but my goodness, does that discomfort have an incredible build up to that final scene.

1) Normally, I'm reading at least three books at a time. One audiobook, a fiction novel, and a non-fiction. If the audiobook is also nonfiction that it it normally only two books at a time

2) Favorite is been Flower for the Sea. It was a novella that I listened to on audiobook. It was so well done but I would recommend reading it physically first. It's a lot and very literally. The pan is my current read Liar, a new adult romance.

The stylized uncanniness of the cover lured me in. Not for everyone—warnings include but are not limited to: unwanted pregnancy, #bodyhorror, abuse—and you should prepare to be disturbed. Lovecraft meets Alien meets Rivers Solomon‘s The Deep. Not my usual pick, but a pick none the less.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ I read an ebook version of this novella. I liked the concept of this story but it was pretty confusing most of the time. I had to keep flipping back and rereading to get my bearings. I do think it‘s well written and I was interested enough that I wanted to keep reading.

Just received my #gettbr recommendations from book riot! I‘d never heard of any of them before so I‘m excited to give them a try!

Well, damn.

This book was physically intense and didn‘t let up! As one of my book club members said, “I‘ve never read a book where the main character was so defined by their anger”

It's angry! I liked it! Seems like something to revisit in the future and all in one go.

Ooof. Not for me. Lots of body horror.

Beautifully written, though.

More than anything, I found this story confusing. The plot is a mix of history, dreams, reality…but it never quite came together for me. Additionally, there‘s a distance created between the characters and the reader that prevented me from really caring about their fates. I have loved Rocklyn‘s writing in the past, but this wasn‘t quite my taste.

I liked the premise, execution not so much. Dark and brooding, interesting world building though a lot seemed to be missing or left out. Ending wasn‘t bad, but it felt like we missed a few steps to get from where we started to the end.

The author mixes several genres in this wild, weird, fantasy, horror novella. It definitely has a Lovecraft feel with the strange, otherworldly monsters.

I enjoyed the concept, but I needed more story development. Too much of the progression was just stalled on the main character's pregnancy.

I'm excited to see what this author does in the future though.

I wasn‘t sure what to expect going into this novella- and after I finished listening to this lovely performance, I must be honest- I am still not exactly sure what I listened to… It‘s a sort of a fantasy/horror/post-apocalyptic mash-up with a lot of emphasis on the more horrific side of pregnancy and childbirth…Iraxi makes for a fascinating main character & while I felt a bit adrift at times with this one, I still felt compelled to keep listening!

Tbh I don‘t even know what I just read. This one was WEIRD. But I enjoyed the writing style, so I‘ll probably check out whatever the author writes next. #Scarathlon2021 #TeamSlaughter

This was not for me. Over half the novella was about her pregnancy and birth. And then her creepy ass baby showed up.
While this sounds a bit like Rosemary's Baby it lacks the depth and character development. It is short and I spent the whole time wondering why I was reading it.
The tag line on the cover "we are people who don't forget"? I don't even know what that means it was barely touched on and never in a meaningful way.
