Not My Problem
Not My Problem | Ciara Smyth
6 posts | 5 read | 9 to read
Perfect for fans of Becky Albertalli and Nina LaCour, this queer coming-of-age story from the author of The Falling in Love Montage is wry, multilayered, and unflinchingly honest. Aideen has plenty of problems she can't solve. But when she stumbles upon overachiever Meabh Kowalska having a full-blown meltdown, she sees one that she can actually fix. Meabh is desperate to escape her crushing pile of extracurriculars. Aideen volunteers to help--by pushing her down the stairs. Problem? Solved. Meabh's sprained ankle is the perfect excuse to ditch her overwhelming schedule. But when one of their classmates learns about their little scheme, more "clients" start asking for Aideen's "help"--kicking off a semester of traded favors, ill-advised hijinks, and even an unexpected chance at love. Fixing other people's problems won't fix her own. But it might be the push Aideen needs to start.

Bookish Song Nr. 56 - Troublemaker

I wasn't really looking for a special song, just skipping through Spotify, but when this song started playing it just immediately threw me back into this book. There sure is a lot of trouble going on and the beat fits the story telling imo. Really, this book is still spinning around in my head 😄

My reading month in February was brilliant. So many good books! At the end I had to choose between Prophet Song and this one. And yes, I may be ignorant, but while PS told me about what is happening all over the world, Ciara Smyth let me relax and forget it for a while. She made me laugh in a world, where there's not a lot to laugh about (that's what it feels like to me atm). Therefore, I give her the award of my #bookofthemonth

This book was love at first sight. Yes, never judge a book by its cover, but I totally did. And I totally loved this book the whole way through. It's one of those I couldn't stop reading and I didn't want it to end. The balance between laughing out loud scenes and deep topics is perfect. Aideen made me laugh really, really hard, but I also felt with her. She has to make grown-up decisions, she shouldn't have to make. But she grows so much ❤

I wrote a kind of combined review of both of Ciara Smyth's YA books for Autostraddle: https://www.autostraddle.com/ciara-smyths-queer-ya-books-remind-me-of-being-a-te....

Both are as hilarious as they are moving, with a very authentic and empathetic feel to her queer teenage characters. Not My Problem is laugh-out-loud funny, make-you-cry sad, and everything in between. I loved it! #QueerBooks #LGBTQBooks #LGBTQ #QueerYA

Ciara Smyth is so funny. One of the best YA authors writing today, imho. You can tell she is really is in touch with contemporary teens (she is also a social worker).
