A wonderful and sad graphic novel about two queer women (one white and trans, the other cis and Chinese) as their relationship disintegrates at the same time as their auntie relationship with their niece holds them together and brings them joy. Very committed to the nuances of relationships and the complexities of human beings. The art is gorgeous and has a fun way of drawing the characters as monsters when engaged in "feral" imaginative playing.

I started STONE FRUIT last night while I sat up with Casey during another of his dodgy tummy episodes. I finished it this morning while he napped by the front door. It‘s a deeply affecting comic about family, relationships, and mental health, and it‘s going on my recs list. #gaymay

Lreads I hope Casey feels better. 💕 2y
xicanti @QuietlyLaura he‘s doing much better this morning. A good dose of stomach medicine and a long sleep helped a lot! 2y
BkClubCare Hugs 🤗 for Casey 2y
Tamra Glad to hear he is better! 2y

This was an emotional rollercoaster, but all in a good way. Even though there is a lot of sadness/depression in this story, I think it is hopeful in the end. I love how Nessie's character ties the other characters together and the role that the spectrum of imagination plays in the story. There is also much to be said for the complicated families that the characters have and how they navigate family in their lives. Love the artwork as well!

Bron (Bronwyn) and Ray (Rachel) are a queer couple who care for their niece twice a week. Chosen family, family of origin, mental health, relationship troubles: these are explored through realistic dialogue in a moving graphic novel by trans Australian cartoonist Lee Lai, who has set this story in Montreal. It‘s on the Stella Prize shortlist: https://stella.org.au/prize/2022-prize/

I‘m not expecting you to be, suddenly, you know, happy all the time. But it‘s like, every morning I feel like there‘s … just … all the eggshells.

A queer couple are going through difficult times, bringing them to a point of decision about their future together. And while the difficulties continue, they both find growth personally, and in their relationships with their sisters. Sad, but ends with a promise of better days ahead.

Someone left a review on a post it in the back of my (library) copy..

smalldogs_bigbooks2419 This is a slight pet peeve of mine. Especially a negative/unimpressed review like this. I loved The Color Purple until I spotted notes someone had written, in ink, on several pages later in the book. 🤦‍♀️ 2y
Tera66 I love that so much. I might leave a little note in one in the future! What a cool surprise. 2y
charl08 @smalldogs_bigbooks2419 wellbit was at the end, so I only saw it after I'd read it myself. I wouldn't have been impressed if they'd written on this (library) book! 2y
charl08 @Tera66 I thought it was quite sweet. I'm not sure the librarians wouldn't weed it out though. 2y

"Yeah. I miss her, too."

And this is where the tears came.
