If you had told me just a few years ago that I‘d become a big #StephenKing fan, I would never have believed you. Eye of The Dragon is the only one of his books that I‘ve DNF‘d and I assumed just by the title that this one would be similar. I assumed wrong and in this case I‘m perfectly fine with that. Also, I‘ll be heartbroken if anything happens to the dog. The fact that there‘s a dog in the story is part of what drew me in.

Hubby “scolded” me for buying another book from Amazon instead of waiting until our local bookstore had it. I‘m only a little bit sorry because it got bent almost in half in our mailbox. 😞 Any thoughts on this book and the rest of the series?

NovelGirl82 This has been on my tbr since it came out, but I have t bought it yet! You‘ll have to let me know how it is. And shame on your mail person for bending a book like that! 3w
Branwen I own two different editions of this book because I love it SO MUCH! If you like magic and dark academia then I think you will love it too! 💕 3w
smalldogs_bigbooks2419 @Branwen I‘m not completely clear on what dark academia is, but I do love stories that have sort of “magical” element to them. 3w

I had originally planned a much more #bookish tattoo for my birthday. Plans had to change when my artist cancelled 24hrs before my appointment. My mom is terrible at “summarizing” books she suggests. If she can manage to not give away the ending, I can usually guess just using the information she gives me. She did well enough on this story to actually pique my interest and even inspire a Google search to see if the story is based on real people. I also just noticed the review from the author of Water for Elephants and I loved that book.

BookBosomed1 Loved that book. I have the sequel on my TBR shelf. 1mo

I have no idea how to plan a swap, but I have an idea. Each participant would start with book 1 of a series on their TBR list, share their thoughts as they read it, then pass it to the next participant. By the end, each participant has read book 1 of a few different series and decides if they want to continue on their own. Inspired by a swap I did with @suvata @Jerdencon and @IndoorDame . I‘d love help with the planning if anyone is interested.

IndoorDame I‘ve never planned a swap so I can‘t offer advice, but I know some of the veteran swap hosts will be happy to. Alternatively, since I think you‘re referring to one of our #lmpbc rounds, if you want to start small you could always propose first in series as a category for the next round of #lmpbc 1mo
smalldogs_bigbooks2419 @IndoorDame waiting and being involved with another round of #lmpbc is also an option. I‘m not sure when @suvata plans to start another round. I also like the idea of having a separate swap just for the series, and therefore possibly being able to start it sooner, but maybe the idea is too similar? 🤷‍♀️ 1mo
IndoorDame @smalldogs_bigbooks2419 I think round 16 starts in November, so depending on how much time you wanted to plan you could definitely start up a new swap mid round. And I don‘t necessarily think it‘s too similar, though @suvata may have more thoughts on that. If you have specific questions about swaps I know @wanderinglynn and @LibrarianRyan are organizing some of the big fall swaps going on now. 1mo
See All 9 Comments
wanderinglynn What you‘ve described is more a postal book club like #lmpbc. A swap is where you‘re matched with someone & you send them books, candy, bookish items (bookmarks, socks, mugs) based on the swap‘s theme. You send a box to your match & you receives box from the one who has your name. There‘s a designated open date for everyone to open their boxes & post a photo of what you received from your match. 1mo
wanderinglynn A swap is a one & done event (one package sent, one packaged received) vs a book club where the book travels and ultimately comes back to the originator. I‘m happy to discuss more about swaps. You could do a swap that has the theme of series (I.e., the books people send are the start of a series). There are all sorts of swap themes. 1mo
LibrarianRyan @smalldogs_bigbooks2419 @indoordame I agree with @wanderinglynn. You are proposing a type of #travelingbook. I have done at least 2 of these and never got the book back. Normally one person decides the book (usually a first in a series) marks it up and sends it to the next person. This usually lasts a year so you have 12 participants. Sometimes you have multiple books going, sometimes not. depends. I enjoyed these, but I do know that I, and ⬇ 1mo
LibrarianRyan a few others who did this at the start of litsy never got our books bad. The books I did not get back (even after asking multiple times) were The Last Magician, Tristan Strong, and I don't remember the 3rd. Being that these are so big it is really easy for people to fall behind. It is what makes #LMPBC nice. It is groups of 4. Only a 4 month commitment. Swaps are usually one and done. the others are book clubs. I don't know who is ⬇
1mo
LibrarianRyan @smalldogs_bigbooks2419 is involved, but check out the #coffeebeanbookclub. They have been going on strong, they send the book and coffee. That is all I know. You might find a member and ask how they run things. That may be more what you are looking for. 1mo
BethM @Mommamanzi runs #coffeebeanbookclub and it‘s no small feat! Ours is cozy themed. One cozy (pre selected) and coffee every month. Occasionally we hit snags but everyone gets their book back, largely bc of how Nicole runs it and the rules she keeps. 1mo

I needed something “fluffy” after a “ruff” day at work. (I think that‘s the end of my terrible puns.) I‘ve only read the first few pages while enjoying a glass of rosé and some calamari by myself at a local favorite restaurant, which probably also contributed, but I started to feel better. ❤️

I finished it less than 30 minutes ago and book hangover is already picking in. This isn‘t one I would have chosen if it hadn‘t been sort of chosen for me as part of this swap, but I really enjoyed it. Now it‘s time for a break from historical fiction for a while. @suvata @Jerdencon @IndoorDame

suvata I‘m so glad that you liked it. It‘s always risky picking a book for someone else to read. 3mo
smalldogs_bigbooks2419 @suvata I agree! I enjoyed all 4 of the books we read in this swap, with the exception of the one I was originally going to contribute. I‘ve bought new books since we started the swap and it should be interesting to choose whatever I want off of my shelf again. I‘ve sort of forgotten how to do that on my own. 🤦‍♀️ I‘d love to join this sort of swap again in the future. 3mo

I really hope I‘m not wrong in thinking this book, which has been on my TBR list since it‘s release, is one of the required textbooks for the College Composition course I‘ll be taking in the fall.
This also happened in my first college level English class, in which The Glass Castle was our textbook. I had already read it at that point and was not at all upset about reading it for a second time and getting to discuss it in class. 🤓📚❤️

I love a good book dedication. This one says: “For the many weird and wonderful thespians whom I have had the good fortune to call my friends. (I promise this is not about you.)” 🎭. This has been on my TBR list for a while. I even have the audio version of it on my audible.com account. I ordered a physical copy of it as well a few days ago from Amazon, instead of from my local bookstore, and my husband is making me feel so guilty!

I‘m so glad this round of #markuppostalbookclub starts on my day off from work! Now I can indulge in a #chunkster of a book, enjoy a big ass mug (my husband calls it a BAM) of coffee, and avoid getting out of my robe for much longer than I usually can. Happy reading @Jerdencon @suvata and @IndoorDame #LMPBC #Round14 #GroupA

suvata Sounds like an amazing day. Have fun. 7mo
IndoorDame Sounds perfect! Enjoy! 7mo
Jerdencon Excited for this book! 7mo
smalldogs_bigbooks2419 @Jerdencon I‘ll be sending each book to you when I‘m done. I‘m not a very fast reader, but I think allowing myself to have these binge reading days will mean finishing with plenty of time to pass them on before the next start date. (edited) 7mo

The tagged book isn‘t the one I‘m reading. I just found it funny that there is an #ipad version. My goal today is to read until mine lets me know it‘s time to recharge, so I can be ready to start a new reading challenge on March 1st. I‘m only about 30% done with my current read, so I might just barely make it in time, but I‘m not one for reading multiple books at the same time. The one I‘ll be starting is also a #chunkster. It will take time!

bnp March is a good month for a chunkster. 7mo

Living a few doors away from a Little Library is very dangerous sometimes. Dangerous and wonderful.

@Jerdencon @suvata @IndoorDame I don‘t have a huge home library like some Littens do. These are the only two books I could find that fall under the category of Historical Fiction. Let me know what you think. I love any excuse to go back to the bookstore, but figured I‘d start with what I already have. #LMPBC Round 14 Group A.

Jerdencon I‘ve read all the light we cannot see but would definitely be interested in the Radium girls 8mo
suvata I‘ve read All The Light.. too. 8mo
IndoorDame I haven‘t read either, so I‘m happy with whatever works for the group 8mo
smalldogs_bigbooks2419 I think we‘re settled on Radium Girls. I started it a few weeks ago. It didn‘t really grab my attention, but I‘m happy to try again. I‘ve read All The Light We Cannot See but was at least 6 years ago, so it probably would have felt like reading it for the first time again. 8mo

I don‘t use my Amazon Prime account very often (or choose a #firstread) but I‘ve been wanting to read this one for a while. Getting it for free was a deal I couldn‘t pass up. 🦒 🦒 ❤️❤️📖📖

rachaich I read this and thought it was ace! 8mo

“There were other obstacles, as well.
I had all these cigarettes to smoke, for instance.
In short: I was busy.” Absolutely no judgement to any smokers here, but this line made me giggle! I have several smokers in my personal and professional life (I‘m married to a former smoker) and it definitely does seem to be how they spend a lot of their free time.

For now I‘m avoiding any of Stephen King‘s pandemic-related books. This one will hopefully make this 5 day quarantine a little more tolerable. 24hrs in and I‘m starting to lose it. Thanks Covid. 🙄 🐉 📖

When we got married 3 years ago today, we got all sorts of interesting marriage advice. My advice to you unmarried littens is to marry someone who won‘t take it personally when you‘d rather focus on your book than on them. My other advice is to go follow my hubby Matthew, @GrizzVarela on the account he started after our date tonight. The tagged book is one we got inspiration from, in writing our personalized vows.

Eggs Great photo❣️ 8mo
smalldogs_bigbooks2419 @Eggs thank you! It‘s one of my (many) favorites from that day. I still love looking at our wedding and even engagement photos every once in a while. 🥰 8mo

ChaoticMissAdventures Happy anniversary!! Great advice, there was just an article on Reddit where a woman's new partner threw away all their books because they weren't allowing her to focus on him and the horror I felt for her!! So glad you found a happy reading friendly partner. ❤️ 8mo
smalldogs_bigbooks2419 @ChaoticMissAdventures 🤯 There would definitely be hell to pay if anyone tried trashing my books for any reason. @GrizzVarela is a book lover as well. He just doesn‘t have as much free time as he‘d like to read so he often goes for audiobooks instead. (edited) 8mo

smalldogs_bigbooks2419 @TheAromaofBooks the line (which is actually more of a paragraph) starts with “It is an impossibility to love a person in the same way, every day. Day in and day out. It is a lie to even pretend to” and ends with something about two people dancing side by side but as individuals in the same performance. We really should go back and read it again. We both loved it as soon as we saw it. 8mo
TheAromaofBooks Yes!! I think that is the same section where she talks about how we have so little faith in the ebb and flow - the natural pattern of even the deepest relationship is not always going to be at the high tide mark of passion at every moment of every day, yet we often trick ourselves into thinking that if we ebb from that mark in even the slightest, it means the entire relationship is on its way to failure, instead of embracing the other moments ⬇ 8mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) in a relationship's cycle, that are just as valid and important in their own way, trusting that the constancy of the relationship is actually in its tidal movements. I also loved her sections about the importance of solitude and making time for quiet and creativity - and this was before even more technology came to take our time!! 8mo
smalldogs_bigbooks2419 Yep! That‘s the one 🥰 8mo
