Stonewall Jackson
Stonewall Jackson: The Man, the Soldier, the Legend | James I. Robertson
3 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
A biography focusing on Jackson as an individual as well as a military strategist and general, by one of the country's leading Civil War historians. The passage of 130 years has only deepened the fascination and reverence for Confederate general Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson. He ranks today as among the half-dozen greatest soldiers that America has produced. Military academies in both hemispheres still teach his tactics. Revered by his men, respected by his foes, Jackson became seemingly invincible. When he learned of the general's fatal wound, Robert E. Lee sent his "affectionate regards", saying, "He has lost his left arm but I my right arm". Jackson's early death in 1863 was the greatest personal loss suffered by the Confederacy and one that permanently crippled the wartime South. This eagerly awaited biography is based on years of research into little-known manuscripts, unpublished letters, newspapers, and other primary sources. It offers for the first time a complete portrait - not only of Jackson the brilliant military strategist and beloved general but also of Jackson, the man of orphaned background, unyielding determination to conquer adversity, and deep religious convictions. Includes b&w photos.

Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson was a famous Confederate general during the US Civil War. Arguably, his death in 1863 was a crucial blow to the Confederacy; it happened prior to the battle of Gettysburg, and the lack of his knowledge in part led to the Confederacy‘s defeat.

Outside of war, Jackson was a fanatic. He was a teacher, a preacher, but also deeply loyal and a task master. This is one of many bios about him. #papadontpreach #Movember

Though he was deeply religious, pretty close to the point of radical, I don‘t think anyone could say Stonewall Jackson had #angeleyes . One of the best Confederate generals during the American Civil War, his amazing skills as a leader helped the Confederate side win some important battles. He was killed by friendly fire at Chancellorsville in 1863, just prior to the arguably pivotal battle in Gettysburg. #ABBAinAugust

Librarybelle Note: His gaze in this image unnerves me. I had this for years on a shelf facing my bed, and it was almost like he watched me sleep. Eventually, I rearranged furniture so that wouldn‘t be the case, but every time I look at this, it‘s almost a haunting feeling I get. 6y
