Sisters of the Forsaken Stars
Sisters of the Forsaken Stars | Lina Rather
8 posts | 7 read | 5 to read
The sisters of the Order of Saint Rita navigate the far reaches of space and challenges of faith in Sisters of the Forsaken Stars, the follow-up to Lina Rather's Sisters of the Vast Black, winner of the Golden Crown Literary Society Award. We lit the spark, maybe we should be here for the flames. Not long ago, Earths colonies and space stations threw off the yoke of planet Earths tyrannical rule. Decades later, trouble is brewing in the Four Systems, and Old Earth is flexing its power in a bid to regain control over its lost territories. The Order of Saint Ritawhose mission is to provide aid and mercy to those in needbore witness to and defied Central Governances atrocities on the remote planet Phyosonga III. The sisters have been running ever since, staying under the radar while still trying to honor their calling. Despite the sisters secrecy, the story of their defiance is spreading like wildfire, spearheaded by a growing anti-Earth religious movement calling for revolution. Faced with staying silent or speaking up, the Order of Saint Rita must decide the role they will playand what hand they will havein reshaping the galaxy. This picks up where Sisters of the Vast Black left off, following the nuns of the Order of Saint Rita in the aftermath of the previous book‘s events. Rather does a fantastic job of deepening her characters (and introducing some new ones) as they deal with the consequences of the previous book. LOTS of interesting ideas here as the Sisters wrestle with the implications of everything that‘s been brought to light. Really hoping for a book three!

Excellent world building and unique characters spoiled by the end of the second volume (see spoiler comment below)

rwmg How did the away team actually get away from St. Ofra while the university was under siege from the Central Governance. Who did Dominguez call and what did he say? Once they got back on the ship I was expecting there to be some explanation or reference to what happened but there wasn't. 2y

Sometimes I get sneaky and put a book really close to her while she‘s sleeping. 😆

#NunsInSpace part 2 🙂. I thought this was a great follow up to Sisters of the Vast Black. The Sisters pick up two new passengers at a space station, one a novitiate and the other the blood sister of one of the Sisters.

2 things I love- discovery of a herd of wild live ships and seeing the beginning of an uprising.

It feels pretty weird that Gemma and the others don't reconnect in this book, and as a result it feels odd in general. Although a lot HAPPENS, not a lot happens, in a way... yeah, I'm describing it badly. It feels like a middle book, a biding-time book. Which is not to say there weren't enjoyable aspects, but I definitely didn't love it as much as the first book.

Counting it in for #BookSpinBingo.

I've been on a little bit of a book-buying spree, in self-pity over my exams and how hard they've been. I won't get chance to read much of them before Monday, but maaaaybe I can fit this one in! I'm not sure why I didn't realise a sequel to Sisters of the Vast Black was out when this came out, but I'm looking forward to digging in a little more.

(Haul pic coming once I've got the last book, should be tomorrow, so you can all ooh and ahh. :p)

The sisters find themselves on the run after the events of Phoyongsa III. Picking up a refugee & a new postulant only add to the difficulties they have to deal with.

This feels like a middle book. A too short middle. The big plot isn‘t resolved, only deepened. Our story is split between 2 parties that don‘t reconnect. We get more worldbuilding, more secrets & confusion. This is less philosophical than the first, but still interesting. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

Soubhiville A sequel! Yay! I just finished the first one and was hoping there would be more. From your review here I guess I better hope for a third as well. 3y
