4 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
Bestselling author Natalie Lloyd returns with her most personal book to date, a story about a girl whoarmed with her trusty, snazzy wheelchairrefuses to let her brittle bone disease stand in the way of adventure. Twelve-year-old homeschooled Olive is tired of being seen as fragile just because she has osteogenesis imperfecta (otherwise known as brittle bone disease) so shes thrilled when she finally convinces her parents to let her attend Macklemore Elementary. Olive cant wait to go to a traditional school and make the friends shes always longed for, until a disastrous first day dashes her hopes of ever fitting in. Then Olive hears whispers about a magical, wish-granting hummingbird that supposedly lives near Macklemore. Itll be the solution to all her problems! If she can find the bird and prove herself worthy, the creature will make her most desperate, secret wish come true. When it becomes clear that she cant solve the mystery on her own, Olive teams up with some unlikely allies who help her learn the truth about the bird. And on the way, she just might learn that our fragile places lead us to the most wonderful magic of all . . .

this book healed parts of my heart that I didn‘t even know were broken. I think I finally understand just why representation in literature matters so much after reading this book. I see so much of myself in Olive? the main character. and of course, the writing, plot, characters, details, and voice are all a masterpiece. I won‘t be surprised if this ends up being my favorite book of 2024.

Book 55 #WinterReadathon #Bookspinbingo

This is a delightful delicious MG novel! Olive is tired of being ‘fragile‘. She wants a life and a best friend! Olive, like the author, has OI, osteogenesis imperfecta; her bones break so easily.

Very excited for this summer release. I love Natalie Lloyd‘s The Key to Extraordinary. It helped me process (some of) my grief from losing my sister a few years ago. This new book‘s protagonist has OI, the rare bone disease that my late sister had (& the author as well). I already know I‘m going to cry through the whole thing, but it‘ll be worth it. I hope you‘ll check out this author and this book in August.
