Bless the Daughter Raised by a Voice in Her Head
Bless the Daughter Raised by a Voice in Her Head: Poems | Warsan Shire
13 posts | 12 read | 8 to read
"With her first full-length poetry collection, Warsan Shire introduces us to a young girl, who, in the absence of a nurturing guide, makes her own stumbling way towards womanhood. Drawing from her own life and the lives of loved ones, as well as pop culture and news headlines, Shire finds vivid, unique details in the experiences of refugees and immigrants, mothers and daughters, Black women, and teenage girls. In Shire's hands, lives spring into fullness. This is noisy life: full of music and weeping and surahs and sirens and birds. This is fragrant life: full of blood and perfume and shisha smoke and jasmine and incense. This is polychrome life: full of henna and moonlight and lipstick and turmeric and kohl"--

This is some dark poetry.
Very honest and deep. I really enjoyed the truth behind it.
Highly recommended for everyone.

Read this in about 30 min. Tender poems about “migration, womanhood, trauma, and resilience“ as the synopsis reads. Really enjoyed it.

The subject matter this bears witness to is difficult, but the writing style is strong and straightforward. My favorite thing about this is it‘s not couched in beauty or grace or sweetness. You can tell the author is writing for herself, so she‘s unapologetic about telling her truth.

@Chrissyreadit headed to you next week ❤️

#OnTBRListFor1Year Added this to my TBR as soon as it came out last February and then promptly forgot about it. #MarchMagic @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

IndoorDame @Chrissyreadit - I think I‘m going to add this to next month‘s reading list now that I‘ve been reminded of it. Is this one that you‘d be interested in reading together? 2y
Chrissyreadit Yes!! Should I get a copy or find a different book and we can make notes and flip flop? 2y
IndoorDame @Chrissyreadit Do you have a preference? I was imagining the first, but a mini markup round would be fun too 😊 2y

Chrissyreadit I would love a mini mark up- I really like reading your notes. If that‘s ok? 2y
Chrissyreadit I can look for a poetry book for April. We can try to do it in Two weeks with switch- for Poetry month? 2y
IndoorDame @Chrissyreadit totally! I‘m excited to see what you choose! We could follow the regular markup schedule and flip flop at the beginning of May. 2y
Chrissyreadit Any of those? 2y
IndoorDame @Chrissyreadit I like the look of Shift, but I‘m okay with you picking anything you‘re excited about. And 2 weeks works for me! 2y
Chrissyreadit Ok I will see about ordering Shift. I May order Hard Part Too- just FYI 2y

You may know the Somali-British poet Warsan Shire from her poetry featured in Beyoncé‘s visual album Lemonade. Here, in Shire‘s debut full-length collection, she absolutely shines, rendering girlhood, gendered violence, the refugee experience, and the parent-child relationship in hauntingly beautiful, heart-wrenching, fierce, otherworldly verse that you‘ll be compelled to return to again and again. This book is a gift and a reckoning.

By turns beautiful and heart-rendering this is easily one of the most moving poetry collections I have ever read. The collection is so so well crafted too. In these poems, Warsan Shire gives snapshots of moments in the lives of refugees and immigrants, especially the experiences of women and girls from Somalia. Highly recommend. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Gorgeous endpapers. 😍

StaceGhost I love her poetry! No shade to those who love the insta poets but it‘s this author for me ❤️among all the contemporary poets her words speak to me 3y
charl08 @StaceGhost just opened this, but struck by how familiar some of her poetry is, the shark image is so powerful. 3y
StaceGhost @charl08 absolutely! I really like atlas (at least I think that‘s the title) with the line “where does it hurt? Everywhere everywhere” 3y

Whoops this doesn't come out until March but you will want this poetry collection. You think you don't recognize the poet's name but most of the words in Beyonce's Lemonade were penned by Warsan Shire.

Poems in this collection range from the refugee experience to the body to love. She's also well known for the poem "Home," which can be found online and starts with this line:
"no one leaves home unless
home is the mouth of a shark"
↘️

ReadingEnvy Shire is British, born to Somali parents in Kenya, so many of her poems ponder belonging and place.

I will recommend the audio, read by the poet. Thanks to Random House Audio for an early listen through the #volumesapp
