Fourteen Days
Fourteen Days: An Unauthorized Gathering | Margaret Atwood
Set in a Lower East Side tenement in the early days of the pandemic, Fourteen Days is a dazzling, heartwarming novel with an unusual twist: each character has been secretly written by a different, major literary voice - from Margaret Atwood and Douglas Preston to Dave Eggers and Celeste Ng. One week into the COVID-19 shutdown, tenants of a Lower East Side apartment building in Manhattan have begun to gather on the rooftop and tell stories. With each passing night, more and more neighbours gather, bringing chairs and milk crates and overturned pails. Gradually the tenants - some of whom have barely spoken to each other - become real neighbours. In this Decameron-like serial novel, general editor Margaret Atwood, Authors Guild president Douglas Preston, and a star-studded list of contributors create a beautiful ode to the people who couldn't get away from the city when the pandemic hit. A dazzling, heartwarming collection, Fourteen Days reveals how beneath the loss and suffering, some communities managed to become stronger.

Pickpick

I know many of us still struggle with the initial days of COVID, and while very few novels have successfully navigated this time, Fourteen Days is one that definitely does. By bringing together all of these powerful authors, Atwood and Preston put together a story that brings us back to not only that time of uncertainty, but to that time where the world was asked to slow down and take care of each other.

kspenmoll I really want to read this! 2mo

Pickpick

I'm giving this a soft pick. Very soft. I admit there are several stories in this collection that just didn't do it for me...of course they are novellas so you're not going to get the same satisfaction you'd get from a full fledged novel. This is about a tenement building during the lock down so yes it's about the pandemic so keep that in mind. Then sit back and enjoy.

Mehso-so

This book has an interesting structure-a group of tenants meet on the rooftop of their apartment building at the start of the COVID lockdown to tell each other stories, with each character‘s voice secretly written by a famous author.

Unfortunately this didn‘t quite work for me; a lot of the stories weren‘t written in the way that people speak and there were more duds than diamonds.

I didn‘t see the ending though and that did elevate it a bit ⬇️

squirrelbrain But it says something that I couldn‘t really be bothered to go back and figure out who had written which character (the ‘secret‘ authors are revealed at the end). Also, don‘t read this if you don‘t like ‘pandemic‘ books - it‘s VERY pandemic-y. (edited) 3mo
squirrelbrain @tamra - I don‘t think they quite pulled it off. 😬 3mo
Tamra Oh shoot! 😟 The idea is such a fun one. 3mo

Ruthiella Agree with @Tamra that this is such a great concept! Like a modern Decameron. Pity it is a dud. 3mo
BarbaraBB That is too bad, the premise sounds great! 3mo

squirrelbrain I have the ARC of this…. I‘m just about keeping up with publication dates on my ARCs so *should* get to it soon. It only gets 3 ⭐️ on NG currently though. 😬 4mo
Tamra @squirrelbrain shoot. I‘m guessing the execution may not live up to the premise. It‘s an intriguing one though. 4mo
