This took some time to get into, but once I did, I absolutely loved it.
I appreciate what Phoebe brought as a character. Her ability to just be and not worry about what anyone else thought of her was quite inspiring. The way she treated and spoke to Juice, she handled so many situations with grace. I just loved it.
This was one of those books that I needed to read at this time in life.

October Bookclub pick. Half the room said they didn't like it. And the other half (the correct half) said they enjoyed the book.
It seems those of us who went in blind, enjoyed it a lot more than those with expectations.
I quite enjoyed it. I really liked Billie. I would love to see a POV from Vance Gilchrist and Helen.
The chapters with the Catachombs were my favorite.

This book was absolutely horrifying.
I had nightmares.
My husband had to tell me to stop reading it.
But I couldn't.
It was too good.
At 60%, I thought we had it all figured out. WHAT MORE COULD THERE BE?? Oh, there was more.
I told all of my friends to avoid this book, not because it was bad 👎, but because it was awful 😱. Omg.

This book was good- I liked most of the characters, eapecially Sam. But it didn't ?wow me in any way.
It wasn't a cozy thriller, obviously, but it certainly wasn't a "sit on the edge of your seat" thriller. This is one of those books that is just in the wrong genre. Maybe more of a drama?

This was for May bookclub - I loved the conversation we had about this time in history. Many people even brought their own stories from their family members. So interesting. And also, incredibly sad. I hate it here.

Mia's bodyguard, Lars is the only option I would accept if I were required a bodyguard.

All of the adults in Mia's life are fun, but in different ways. It seems like she has mostly good role models.
Her dad, Philippe again steals the show. He is so cool.

@dabbe

dabbe I have one. It's in my top five favorite books of ALL time: OUT OF THE DUST by Karen Hesse. It's a book of poems that tells the story of a girl going through the Great Depression. I cannot say enough how much I love it. I have a feeling most of us will have some books to add to our TBR--if we want to read children's books that is! The 17 books I read were ones I read while teaching middle school in the 90s! Thanks for playing and sharing. 🤩😂🤗 10mo
The.Great.Catsby @dabbe thank you for the rec!! Yeah, I think teachers have a little bit of an advantage, haha. Thank you for your years of service! I come from a family of educators and I know it is really hard work. 10mo
dabbe @The.Great.Catsby Yeah, it would be bad if we had the students read a book that we hadn't read! 😅 A couple of teachers did that at my old high school a few years back; the principal was fired, and the department chair lost her position. 😱 10mo
See All 7 Comments
Singout I actually thought it was kind of cool in Grad 11 (1986) when we were asked to find our own sci-fi book and read it. The teacher somehow managed to do really well with that without actually knowing all the books we were thinking/writing/presenting about. (I got off the hook for doing a presentation because he could see I was terrified.) 10mo
The.Great.Catsby @dabbe OMG! Well, hopefully they learned from that now read the books they teach. 🙃 10mo
The.Great.Catsby @Singout WHAT?!?! That's crazy. And that's putting a lot of faith into you all. Glad no one went off the deep end with that. Haha. I loved when teachers pushed me outside of my comfort zone, but managed not to push me too hard for me to end up in the terrified zone. 10mo
Singout Yes, the book I went with was The Hitchhiker‘s Guide to the Galaxy, because I loved the absurd humour and it seemed as much fantasy as hard-core sci-fi. I would guess that he did vet the books a teeny bit before letting us plunge in. 10mo
