Enlightening upon ptsd responses and how they follow an 8-grader having been violently assaulted because of her orna while with an Iranian fried. It tried to explain her family's opposition to her wearing a hijab instead and desire to connect to Islam, yet that felt disconnected. I didn‘t understand why she went from orna to hijab. Same with families Bangladesh tragic history. Many portions confused me, history wise. Colorful emotions #inclusive

A beautifully illustrated story. Nisrin works to overcome trauma, seeks to find connections to her family's culture, faces racism, builds friendship, & showcases her excellent anime taste. I loved this, & the references were a treat. There's also an illustrated recipe at the end, & I love those! Set in 2002, a man attacks Nisrin and her friend on their way home violently tearing off Nisrin‘s orna. The story talks about the PTSD both girls faced afterward, how it impacts their friendship, and how it influences the way Nisrin chooses to interact with her faith. For a MG graphic novel, I felt it dealt with difficult subjects in a nuanced way while still remaining accessible to kids. I also enjoyed the short report on Bangladesh.
