A Proposal They Can't Refuse
A Proposal They Can't Refuse | Natalie Caña
9 posts | 11 read | 11 to read
Natalie Caña turns up the heat, humor and heart in this debut rom-com about a Puerto Rican chef and an Irish American whiskey distiller forced into a fake engagement by their scheming octogenarian grandfathers. Kamilah Vega is desperate to convince her family to update their Puerto Rican restaurant and enter it into the Fall Foodie Tour. With the gentrification of their Chicago neighborhood, it's the only way to save the place. The fly in her mofongo--her blackmailing abuelo says if she wants to change anything in his restaurant, she'll have to marry the one man she can't stand: his best friend's grandson. Liam Kane spent a decade working to turn his family's distillery into a contender. Now he and his grandfather are on the verge of winning a national competition. Then Granda hits him with a one-two punch: he has cancer and he has his heart set on seeing Liam married before it's too late. And Granda knows just the girl...Kamilah Vega. If they refuse, their grandfathers will sell the building that houses both their businesses. With their futures on the line, Kamilah and Liam plan to outfox the devious duo, faking an engagement until they both get what they want. But soon, they find themselves tangled up in more than either of them bargained for.

I really enjoyed this friends to lovers story because of all the messy family bits, especially the meddling grandpas. The food and whiskey descriptions will make your mouth water and the Irish and Puerto Rican cultural touch points will warm your heart. Great on #audio #BookspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

This was so cute! A low pick overall for being good but a little simple and trope-y, but the funny bits were funny and it made me hungry for Puerto Rican food and whiskey. Sometimes I get a bit surprised in romance novels by HOW QUICKLY people become obsessed but I guess that‘s par for the course!

Kennglenn That sounds like a great book 2y

Just started the tagged romance novel (which I got for Christmas ages ago) to celebrate being done with masters work for the year! It feels really good to read something fun, frivolous and cute again.

Fake dating with only one bed…. While trying to update and modernise a family Puerto Rican restaurant and an Irish whiskey distillery. I love it.

4 âï¸ I enjoyed this book because I could buy into the storyline. The 'enemies' portion of the book was understandable and not overdone and the transition to 'lovers' was heartwarming and not too cheesy or too speedy. I also really enjoyed the relationships between many of the minor characters- Liam and Granda were adorable, as were Kamilah's parents.

Kamilah and Liam are childhood frenemies whose future family businesses are in their hands .Both grandfathers come up with a plan of marriage for them refuse and they lose their life‘s work.

The closeness of family values, the multi generational community was so endearing! The banter between the grandchildren and grandfathers was sweet, comical, and so authentic! What the reader experiences reading this is an inclusion at the dining room table.

This is not my favorite kind of story (fake engagement) but I really ended up enjoying this book. A good summer read.

It‘s a soft pick for me. Kamilah and Liam have to fake date to hold onto their dreams of running their respective family businesses. I love a fake engagement but this one didn‘t sit quite right. The grandpas‘ antics started off cute, but were too much at the end. Kamilah‘s family walked a fine line between tough love and bullying. The saving grace was the genuine relationship between Kamilah and Liam which built off their years of friendship.

Zuhkeeyah I received this as an ARC from Mira books via #NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. 3y
