I love the magic Lucier weaves through this dark yet hopeful tale. I devoured it in one sitting! --Kristin Cashore, author of the New York Times bestselling Graceling Realm books "A beautifully crafted novel containing everything I love in an epic fantasy: complex characters and relationships, excellent world building, and a compelling story full of twists and turns." --Juliet Marillier, author of the Blackthorn & Grim and Warrior Bards series A rich and captivating YA standalone fantasy that's perfect for fans of Brigid Kemmerer, Rachel Hartman, and Naomi Novik, from the writer whose stories have been called brilliant (Booklist), masterful (Horn Book), and breathtaking (School Library Journal), comes a captivating new standalone fantasy. In the aftermath of a devastating plague, a young lord is determined to discover the truth behind a mysterious attempt to assassinate the young queen. Three years ago, young Lord Cassia disappeared in the midst of war. Since then, a devastating illness has swept the land, leaving countless dead and a kingdom forever altered. Having survived war and plague, Cas, now eighteen, wants only to return to his home in the mountains and forget past horrors. But home is not what he remembers. His castle has become a refuge for the royal court. And they have brought their enemies with them. An assassin targets those closest to the queen, drawing Cas into a search for a killer. With the help of a historian-in-training named Lena, he soon realizes that who is behind the attacks is far less important than why. Cas and Lena must look to the past, following the trail of a terrible secretone that could threaten the kingdoms newfound peace and plunge it back into war.

I enjoyed this book immensely. I don't quite understand the poor reviews, this was not a flashy YA novel, the MC was recovering from trauma and looking for his place. It was an enjoyable, subdued mystery and setting and I found a YA from the perspective of the male character to be refreshing.

I was really looking forward to this book but it fell flat. I had to squint to find the plot and when I thought I found it, turned out to be something else. There were several mini plots that never had a resolution. The title was misleading and had nothing to do with the story. Cas can see dead people but it‘s not explained and he doesn‘t use it. I skimmed through it just to finish and check it off my Popsugar challenge.

Have you ever enjoyed a book so much that halfway through it you panic, and immediately google if its a standalone book or in a series?!?? Just me? Okay. For the record. A truly amazing standalone book! (Thank the gods)

Action-packed adventure. Danger stalks the royalty of this land. First the plague decimated the families and now a more personal enemy sets their sights on the Queen and those around her. Atmospheric, if a bit too violent for my tastes.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I was unable to put “Year of the Reaper” down. The plot was fast-paced with great yet flawed characters, intermittently sprinkled with witty humor, a sweet slow-burn romance, and lots of suspense. I did not see the massive plot twist coming, and it was a doozy. Overall I loved this book and only wish there was an epilogue and a book map.

Apparently I‘m reading four books at once (again) because this one drew me right in; the synopsis didn‘t really interest me at all, but holy crow is the story GOOD; time to keep reading📖 #currentread
