The Herd
The Herd: the thought-provoking and unputdownable must-read book club novel of 2022 | Emily Edwards
11 posts | 12 read | 15 to read
PICKED AS ONE OF STYLIST MAGAZINE'S 'FICTION BOOKS YOU CAN'T MISS IN 2022' 'It is hard to imagine a more timely novel. A fascinating exploration of all sides of a particularly knotty, politicized issue.' Jodi Picoult 'Compelling and nuanced. A hugely impressive page-turner' Ashley Audrain 'Will have book clubs across the country in hot debate! Brilliant.' Clare Mackintosh **** You should never judge how someone chooses to raise their child. Elizabeth and Bryony are polar opposites but their unexpected friendship has always worked. They're the best of friends, and godmothers to each other's daughters - because they trust that the safety of their children is both of their top priority. But what if their choice could harm your own child? Little do they know that they differ radically over one very important issue. And when Bryony, afraid of being judged, tells what is supposed to be a harmless white lie before a child's birthday party, the consequences are more catastrophic than either of them could ever have imagined . . . **** 'Really beautifully written, compassionately told and incredibly thought provoking. A truly immersive telling of both sides of a story' Susan Lewis 'Insightful, compassionate and nuanced. The Herd is so good.' Louise O'Neill 'A genuine rollercoaster that asks big moral questions with beautifully drawn characters.' Sharon Horgan, co-creator of CATASTROPHE Here's what early readers are saying about The Herd: 'A timely and dramatic novel showing both sides of an ongoing debate. Loved this read!' ***** 'Such a genuine tale with such high stakes emotion and sensitivity' ***** 'A fantastic, thought-provoking and gripping book which would make a cracking book club read' ***** 'A complex, layered, wholly character-driven look at a complicated and controversial subject' *****

This is a thoughtful and compelling story about 2 friends (neither of whom are easy to like) torn apart by the tragic consequences of differing views on vaccines. The author does well to make both sympathetic if not at times infuriating in their positions. The varied anonymous voices in the short italicised chapters also add more voice and colour.

This book would be perfect for a book club (or horrible depending on those in the group since it can be a contentious topic). I thought the author did a really good job showing the different sides to this complicated issue. I can‘t say that I particularly related to or agreed with either main character as they both made bad choices but I could understand why they thought they should do what they did. Well written and thought provoking! 🌟🌟🌟🌟

I enjoyed this story but found it irritating at the same time. There are a few grey areas and I didn‘t particularly like Elizabeth, one of the main characters. The vaccination debate is portrayed well, it seems well researched. I read it with my local book club and I would recommend it for such a discussion group. Much to chat about.

Fascinating subject matter. Oh the dilemma! This presented both sides of the debate about vaccinations quite well. A very interesting read. What this book highlighted is that most things are never black and white but many shades of grey in between.

I ❤️ a good “rich people behaving badly” story and this one injects (no pun intended) very timely and relevant elements on the topic of childhood vaccinations. Utterly compelling, I could see this sparking feisty book club discussions. 👍🏼

Chose this at the library and what a good choice. A great debate about the safety and choice of vaccinations

A good domestic story- with a very topical subject at the heart of it. Thought it presented both sides of the topic well and I can see it would make for some good discussions at book clubs.

Very compelling, very topical, VERY UNDEMANDING. Goodness knows we love a domestic drama and The Herd is exactly that. It‘s not super original and I spotted the twist a bit early but it‘s a satisfying, easy read.

The blurb doesn‘t mention the specific subject of this novel about a white lie told between best friends at a party, that causes a catastrophic fallout and a court case so putting it in spoiler tag below.

I really couldn‘t put this down and it presented a very nuanced view of what is so often a ‘black or white‘ issue. All of the characters had flaws, which made it more real / believable. A great twist at the end too.

squirrelbrain The subject is childhood vaccinations , specifically MMR. Hence ‘The Herd‘ for herd immunity. 3y
TrishB This sounds really interesting so I‘m not looking at the spoiler! Currently Qe for hardback - worth it? 3y
squirrelbrain Yes, I would say so @TrishB - it‘s kind of domestic suspense; but not in a thrillerish kind of way. You could say it‘s a bit Jodi Picoult though, and I think you‘re not keen on her? I had seen the subject matter beforehand, it‘s just not on the blurb and I haven‘t revealed anything about the book in my spoiler so maybe have a quick peek before you buy?! 3y

TrishB That‘s very topical! I thought it might be that. 👍🏻 3y
squirrelbrain It‘s certainly topical @TrishB although it was apparently written prior to all of ‘this‘, but all of the arguments can be directly applied. 3y
Reggie I‘m curious. Stacked! 3y
mamareading Wondering if it felt preachy? If the showing both sides results in long preachy monologues? That‘s my only thought, but no one has mentioned that so it must be well done (edited) 3y
squirrelbrain It didn‘t feel preachy to me @mamareading - There was a clever device whereby a number of ‘onlookers‘ gave their views, in short snippets, ranging from a doctor to an internet troll so this added more perspective too. 3y
mamareading @squirrelbrain I‘ve added it to my Goodreads list, thanks for the recommendation! 3y
