Jennifer Chan Is Not Alone
Jennifer Chan Is Not Alone | Tae Keller
7 posts | 7 read | 5 to read
In her first novel since winning the Newbery Medal for When You Trap a Tiger, Tae Keller offers a gripping and emotional story about a girl who is alienated by her friends . . . for believing in aliens. Sometimes middle school can make you feel like you're totally alone in the universe...but what if we aren't alone at all? Thanks to her best friend, Reagan, Mallory Moss knows the rules of middle school. The most important one? You have to fit in to survive. But then Jennifer Chan moves in across the street, and that rule doesnt seem to apply. Jennifer doesnt care about the laws of middle school, or the laws of the universe. She believes in aliensand she thinks she can find them. Then Jennifer goes missing. Using clues from Jennifers journals, Mallory goes searching. But the closer she gets, the more Mallory has to confront why Jennifer might have run . . . and face the truth within herself. Tae Keller lights up the sky with this insightful story about shifting friendships, right and wrong, and the power we all hold to influence and change one another. No one is alone.

I fit in one more audiobook this afternoon to round out my end of year stats. This is a middle grade novel about bullying, the ones being bullied, the ones participating as a method of self protection, and the ones bullying. I liked it and I think it has a good message, but I‘ll be curious as to whether the girls it‘s intended for will appreciate and learn from it as well.

The narrator of this book was so incredibly frustrating, but in a very real way. I felt like I could have been reading about any of my middle schoolers and I will definitely be recommending this at work! It was very well done! #MiddleGradeMarch @megnews @sblbooks

Jennifer is the new kid at middle school and steps to the beat of her own drummer. She has trouble fitting in; she believes in aliens, and thinks she can find them. Then she disappears…soft pick MG novel.

Well, my 11-year-old bailed about 1/3 of the way through this book; a shame too, I think if she had stuck with it she would‘ve enjoyed it. I, however, was too invested to not finish it. In my daughter‘s defense, I could see how the jumping from Now to Then may be a bit confusing; I thought it was done well, though. Overall, the story is well written, a touch ‘squishy‘ near the end but it‘s heart is in the right place.

I‘m lukewarm about this middle-school anti-bullying story, but I‘d love to hear from tweens about their impressions. Read my full review here: https://debbybrauer.org/#jennifer-chan-is-not-alone
