Hello, Molly!: A Memoir
Hello, Molly!: A Memoir | Sean Wilsey, Molly Shannon
10 posts | 11 read | 8 to read
A candid, compulsively readable, hilarious, and heartbreaking memoir of resilience and redemption At age four, Molly Shannon's world was shattered when she lost her mother, baby sister, and cousin in a car accident with her father at the wheel. Held together by her tender and complicated relationship with her grieving father, Molly was raised in a permissive household where her gift for improvising and role-playing blossomed alongside the fearlessness that would lead her to become a celebrated actress. From there, Molly ventured into the wider world of New York and Los Angeles show business, where she created her own opportunities and developed her daring and empathetic comedy. Filled with behind-the-scenes stories involving everyone from Whitney Houston to Adam Sandler to Monica Lewinski, many told for the first time here, Hello, Molly! spans Molly's time on Saturday Night Live--where she starred alongside Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler, Cheri Oteri, Tracy Morgan, and Jimmy Fallon, among many others. At the same time, it explores with humor and candor her struggle to come to terms with the legacy of her father, a man who both fostered her gifts and drive and was left with the impossible task of raising his kids alone after the loss of her mother. Witty, winning, and told with tremendous energy and heart, Hello, Molly!, written with Sean Wilsey, sheds new and revelatory light on the life and work of one of our most talented and free-spirited performers.

There were parts of this I thought were well done and parts that were meh. When Molly talks about her family, it was so sincere and heartfelt. When she talks about her acting life it seemed flimsy and for shock value. She did okay as the narrator.

I used to watch Will and Grace and she played kooky neighbour Val. She seems like that in her audiobook too, vivacious and full of energy. Her family was in a car accident when she was 4, and her mother and sister died. She and her younger sis were raised by their dad, and while he tried his best, his parenting style is best described as very permissive. Like when she and her friend snuck on a plane to New York City from Cleveland. They were 12!

RealLifeReading One thing about Molly Shannon‘s story was her persistence and determination to become an actress. A New York Times article used the headline “The Unsinkable Molly Shannon” and that really is perfect for her. She really just kept going and never gave up. 2y

I loved hearing Molly‘s story (especially since she is also from Cleveland 😉). She was able to turn trauma and heartbreak into positivity and she has such a unique, beautiful story to tell!

I grew up near Molly‘s hometown and I worked at the school where her mom was a librarian. It was fun to remember the local places she mentioned that are long gone. Audiobook was the right choice for this one. Molly reads with a lot of emotion and I found myself smiling through her stories.

I enjoy Molly‘s characters on SNL - while this does provide some insight to who she is as a human, the bulk revolves around the complicated relationship she has with her father on a somewhat surface level.

So 5 stars for Molly Shannon the hilarious human but 2 stars for Molly Shannon the would be author- memoirist. No disrespect to Molly, but her writing skills were VERY elemental & her book which had some very reflective moments was unfortunately filled with redundancy and excessive name dropping. I have a feeling this would have been better on audio. Thanks for sharing @KarenUK 🥰It was the perfect beach read
