Paper Lion
Paper Lion: Confessions of a Last-String Quarterback | George Plimpton
14 posts | 6 read | 3 to read
The book that made a legend and captured America's sport in detail that's never been matched, now repackaged and featuring a foreword by Nicholas Dawidoff, original letters and manuscript pages, video interviews with the author, audio clips of readings, and more from the Plimpton Archives. George Plimpton was perhaps best known for PAPER LION, the book that set the bar for participatory sports journalism. With his characteristic wit, Plimpton recounts his experiences in talking his way into training camp with the Detroit Lions, practicing with the team, and taking snaps behind center. His breezy style captures the pressures and tensions rookies confront, the hijinks that pervade when sixty high-strung guys live together in close quarters, and a host of football rites and rituals. One of the funniest and most insightful books ever written on football, PAPER LION is a classic look at the gridiron game and a book The Wall Street Journal calls "a continuous feast...The best book ever about football--or anything!"

Working on the Paper Lion episode. Wondering if any big time modern leagues would let some writer actually play. And of they did, would you do it?

What a fantastic book, one of the first to go first-hand onto the playing field & show us the humans underneath the helmets.

Superbly written, I feel like I know each of the players personally.

I liked this book. George Plimpton is a good storyteller and made this tale of the time he spent with the Detroit Lions extremely interesting. I now understand why my Dad loved his writings. Thanks @NCNY for putting it on your #FreakyFriday list. I'll have to read his other books.

I've had a lovely morning and afternoon with my family celebrating Easter. But now it's time to start my #FreakyFriday books. These are the first three of my library holds to come in.

@NCNY These all look like wonderful books. The first one that caught my eye was Paper Lion because George Plimpton was one of my father's favorite authors. I've never read any of his books, so I'll start with that one. I've only read Harry Potter, Kavalier and Clay, and Girl Waits with Gun. I've picked out some others but I have a feeling I'll be making my way through this list long after April. #FreakyFriday

NCNY Glad the George Plimpton book has a connection for you. I agree that I'll probably be going through your list well past April. It has become a library/shopping list for me. 🙂 6y
monalyisha I love the idea of people continuing even after April‘s over! 💞 6y
