Obernewtyn Chronicles Volume 1: Popular Penguins: Popular Penguins | Isobelle Carmody
20 posts | 23 read | 21 to read
In a world struggling back from the brink of apocalypse, life is harsh. But for Elspeth Gordie, born with enhanced mental abilities that would see her sterilised or burned if discovered, it is also dangerous. There is only survival by secrecy, and so she determines never to use her forbidden powers. But it is as if they have their own imperative, and their use inevitably brings her to the attention of the totalitarian Council that rules the Land . . .

It‘s so strange revisiting Obernewtyn because I remember some parts so strongly and other parts feel brand new… it‘s also strange because I hold memories of characters who I love but who you only get glimmers of in book one (and those glimmers are not always complimentary).

This is very much an introductory book, it sets up the world, the characters and what‘s at stake - and I really had a great time reacquainting myself with Elspeth & co.

Me mid way through telling someone that I was reading Obernewyton by Isobelle Carmody

Them : oooh, by the lady who wrote the Chrestomanci books?

Me in a horrified whisper : that‘s Diana Wynne Jones

Anyway, I read the majority of IC books in high school before I got entirely too impatient with her publishing schedule. The last book published in 2015 & I really want to finish the series but it‘s been awhile so I‘m back at bk 1 this time on 🎧

thegirlwiththelibrarybag For context : I‘ve never had anyone in my age group, who enjoys books, who lives in Australia to just have never heard of Isobelle Carmody. I do love talking about Diana Wynne Jones tho - so I was happy to redirect the conversation in that direction. 9mo
Ruthiella I can see why you became a librarian. It‘s all about information! ℹ️ 9mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Ruthiella 😅 Diana Wynne Jones is one of my all time favourite authors 9mo

O is for Obernewtyn

A series that in many ways defined my reading pathway in high school but that I haven‘t finished reading due to some rather extreme wait times between books! (The whole thing is out now though if you are interested)

I love these covers! I‘m a little sad that it‘s impossible to have a complete set with this cover art but that‘s what happens when a series is published over 20-30 years 😳😅

Revisiting an old favourite, but this time read by the author. Not only did it get me through a stressful day at work, but it‘s the first book in a series that has been really important to me for years.

readingjedi This was one of my late father's favourite series. I'm looking forward to reading it myself 🙂 6y
GivenLemons It‘s a beautiful series, I think that you‘ll really enjoy it 6y

1. Ready Player One

2. I did this years ago with Song of Susannah, not realising it was part of a series and not even book 1 at that 😶

3. Isobelle Carmody. She was lovely and told me smarter people read fantasy fiction 😉

4. Butterbeer

I have read this old favourite many times. I listened to the audiobook which is read by the author herself this time. She does a wonderful job of varying the characters' voices. It is very much just the beginning of a series and isn't the most gripping on its own but I still love it.

LazyOwl I'm listening to the audio at the moment too. Great books. 7y

I finished reading some great books whilst on holidays.

Obernewtyn was a reread for me, but this time audio read by the author. Great Australian fantasy/dystopian author who started writing this story when she was only 14.

My favorite out of the four read though was Morning Star.

vicgreentoriafield Red Rising was a great series. I'm excited for Iron Gold to come out 7y
LazyOwl @vicgreentoriafield ooh, I didn't realise there was another book coming. I will have to tell hubby as he also read this series and loved it 7y

One of my favourite series and am revisiting through audiobooks. They are read by Isobelle Carmody and it wonderful hearing the story through her voice. All are performed with a dramatic feel, with each character being distinctive from the next. She uses a different timber, accent, pitch, etc. for each.

#debut! Obernewtyn was first published in 1988 and the last book in the series came out last year... I devoured Isobelle Carmody's books in highschool but have yet to complete this series (it's on my todo list for this year) #booktober

MandaChittles I'd love to read this again! 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @MandaChittles, I need to get motivated! I read this one a couple of months ago but need to keep going! 8y

My pink shelf is a little underwhelming 🤔 but I think that's because I don't tend to gravitate towards YA/NA contemporary genre... (but I have read 7 of the 10 books on this shelf!)

Also, Obernewyton isn't really a PINK book it's been published as a POPULAR PENGUIN but in support of Breast Cancer research (which is why it is pink and not orange)

Obernewtyn is the 1st in the 7 volume Obernewtyn Chronicles. I usually don't go in for multi-volume fantasy sagas as many of them seem needlessly drawn out for either profit, profligacy, or both. Obernewtyn reads like a series entry, but there's the right level of necessary information to expandable and exploitable material. If post-apocalyptic dystopian YA reads are your thing (Divergent, Hunger Games, Maze Runner) give this earlier entry a try.

Huzzah for Popular Penguins! This may be the only minimalistic cover in the house 🤔 Any other IC fans out there? The last book in this saga came out late last year (and I've been meaning to reread ever since) #augustphotochallenge @TheSpinecrackersBookClub

TheSpinecrackersBookClub I'm being quite one track minded and I can't stop staring at your psychic detective bag (I think) under the book. 8y
