The Chimpanzee Whisperer
The Chimpanzee Whisperer: A Life of Love and Loss, Compassion and Conservation | Stany Nyandwi
10 posts | 2 read | 7 to read
A moving, heartwarming memoir about a conservation hero and real-life chimpanzee whisperernow the subject of the award-winning documentary film Pant Hoot. Stany Nyandwis gift for communicating with chimpanzees is so special that world-renowned primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall has called him a chimpanzee whisperer. His skills and devotion to these creaturesour closest living relatives, with whom we share 98.7 percent of our DNAhave earned him international awards and sent him on travels within Africa and around the world. But he began life in poverty, born and raised in a dirt-floor, straw-roofed hut in rural Burundi. The Chimpanzee Whisperer is the story of his astonishing life journey. It is also an African story. Receiving only an elementary education before he quit school, he suffered injustice and tragic loss because of his ethnic group. He began caring for orphaned and rescued chimps in Burundi. When the country descended into civil war and genocide, he was forced to flee with the chimps and endured long separation from his family. Continuing to work with and learn about chimpanzees in Kenya, Uganda, and later South Africa, he made himself into an incomparable authority. His memoir has adventure, danger, and many unique and touching stories about chimpanzees that show his bond with and understanding of them. As told to award-winning author David Blissett, it reveals a remarkable man who has refused to let circumstances defeat him. Conditioned by hate, wounded by loss, he has lived for love, faith, and compassion, giving new life, as Dr. Jane Goodall writes in her foreword, to so many chimpanzees whose families, like his own, were torn apart by violence.

Stany tells this very personal story to a translator. It‘s about how he learned to care for chimpanzees in his native #Burundi as a young man. Eventually he had to escape or risk death or recruitment to be a soldier in the civil war between Hutus and Tutsis. Working with the Jane Goodall Institute he continued working with and learning about chimps. Goodall called him the chimp whisperer, a name originally bestowed on her. Lacking a formal ⬇️

Texreader education he was often overlooked for jobs he was probably the most qualified for given his immense experience and uncanny abilities with chimps. This book is Stany‘s opportunity to describe his extreme poverty, his dismay at being passed over by those with a degree, his sadness over wrongs done to him, but also his deep love of family (many brutally killed in Burundi), and Christ. Told simply this is ultimately a feel-good read while ⬇️ 2y
Texreader learning an immense amount about chimps. I enjoyed it a lot but it‘s probably not for everyone. #readingafrica2022 @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB 2y
Librarybelle It sounds like he had a harrowing experience, but also a deep appreciation for chimps. 2y

“A category-five cuddle.”

Eddie is an adult male chimpanzee that has escaped his side of the chimpanzee orphan refugee island, and can be ferocious given the cruelty he experienced when he was young.

Last challenge update. My apologies for taking over your feed tonight!

These are the books I own and hope to read for #readingafrica2022. Some of the books cover multiple countries, so I‘m hoping I‘m capable of getting this done. I still have a few countries I haven‘t gotten books for yet, but I have high hopes! @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

I just realized I can move #Comoros and #EquatorialGuinea to the books I‘ve read! Whoohoo!

Another memoir of triumph and resilience, this time set in #Burundi 🇧🇮 Stany Nyandwi suffered unimaginable poverty and tragedy as the war between the Tutsi & Hutu ravaged his country. But what makes this story really stand out is the ability Stany possess- the gift of “speaking” to chimpanzees. This ability to offer conflict resolution between primates helped Nyandwi use his skills to aid humans too. Amazing narration #ARC #NowAvailable

BarbaraBB Wow. I already have completed Burundi but I might add this one 3y
Librarybelle ❤️❤️❤️ This sounds so impactful! 3y
