Stany tells this very personal story to a translator. It‘s about how he learned to care for chimpanzees in his native #Burundi as a young man. Eventually he had to escape or risk death or recruitment to be a soldier in the civil war between Hutus and Tutsis. Working with the Jane Goodall Institute he continued working with and learning about chimps. Goodall called him the chimp whisperer, a name originally bestowed on her. Lacking a formal ⬇️

This book is Stany‘s opportunity to describe his extreme poverty, his dismay at being passed over by those with a degree, his sadness over wrongs done to him, but also his deep love of family (many brutally killed in Burundi), and Christ. Told simply this is ultimately a feel-good read while ⬇️ 2y
Texreader learning an immense amount about chimps. I enjoyed it a lot but it‘s probably not for everyone. #readingafrica2022 @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB 2y
Librarybelle It sounds like he had a harrowing experience, but also a deep appreciation for chimps. 2y

“A category-five cuddle.”

Eddie is an adult male chimpanzee that has escaped his side of the chimpanzee orphan refugee island, and can be ferocious given the cruelty he experienced when he was young.

Since I finished two books in this challenge today & I‘m starting the tagged book, I figured it was time for an update on my map! I‘m reading the tagged book for #IvoryCoast and The Chimpanzee Whisperer for #Burundi. I‘d already read a book that included Burundi in small part. The Chimpanzee Whisperer is about a man from Burundi who sets out to save the apes and I figured it will give me a more well-rounded view of the country. #readingafrica2022

A good read, but another sad book set in an African country that descends into war and chaos with an overspill of the genocide that occurred in neighbouring Rwanda. Seems even worse when told through the eyes off a child. Nevertheless an important read. #Burundi #ReadingAfrica2022

Starting this book which takes me to #Burundi for #ReadingAfrica2022. This will be my 22nd country for this challenge.

@BarbaraBB @Librarybelle

DrexEdit I read this one for Burundi as well. I liked it even though it was also horrifying. 2y
Andrew65 @DrexEdit This seems to be a recurring theme for some of the books for the challenge whether it Burindi, Rwanda, Sudan, Eritrea etc… 2y
BarbaraBB I was sorry I read this one before the challenge started but I enjoyed it a lot 2y

I‘ve read a lot for the #readingafrica2022 challenge but I still have a long way to go! These are the books on my shelf still to read. And I still have 8 countries unaccounted for. I may not finish Africa by the end of the year but I sure will have made a good effort! The tagged book is for #Burundi. @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB
