Bitter
Bitter | Akwaeke Emezi

From the critically acclaimed author of Pet and The Death of Vivek Oji, Bitter, a companion novel to Pet, takes a timely and riveting look at the power of youth, protest and art. Bitter is thrilled to have been chosen to attend Eucalyptus, a special school where she can focus on her painting surrounded by other creative teens. But outside this haven, the streets are filled with protests against the deep injustices that grip the town of Lucille. Bitter's instinct is to stay safe within the walls of Eucalyptus . . . but her friends aren't willing to settle for a world that the adults say is "just the way things are." Pulled between old friendships, her creative passion, and a new a romance, Bitter isn't sure where she belongs - in the art studio or in the streets. And if she does find a way to help the revolution while being true to who she is, she must also ask: at what cost?

Where Pet felt like a MG read to me, this prequel was every bit the YA story it‘s billed as. Compared to its companion novel, Bitter is more morally ambiguous, the violence feels more immediate, and it depicts a world much closer to our own which makes it more disturbing. Of the two I actually preferred this one, which surprised me a little because I often find prequels more hit than miss.

A prequel to “Pet”.

Bitter has had a hard life until she attends the Eucalyptus school. Outside the school, kids are fighting against monsters (the rulers of the city both politicians and company leaders).

A book about fighting, friendships and belonging.

BarbaraBB I feel flattered & I love your pic! 2y

#BookReport

Just back after almost one week in Paris. I‘m so glad I managed to visit Paris again, I love that city.

Before I left I finished Minor Feelings #SheSaid, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and Birds, Beast and Relatives.

I‘ve started both Maps and Bitter. Bitter came with me to Paris and we had a couple of hours reading in the Luxembourg park so I‘m almost finished. Not sure how I feel about Maps.

Finish Minor Feelings #SheSaid

I also want to finish Birds, Beasts and Relatives, and The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle.

I want to start Maps of Our Spectacular Bodies and hopefully also Bitter.

Cinfhen I DNF Maps so I‘m curious to see how others get on with it 2y
AnneCecilie @Cinfhen I have noticed that the book is quite dividing and even the ones who love it have a trigger warning for the cancer aspect. I also read somewhere that you know were early if you gonna love it or not. (edited) 2y
Cinfhen Yeah / I bailed VERY EARLY because of the cancer narrator - it was too much for me personally but I understand the creativity that the author is expressing 2y

With a similar voice to Pet this explores the inverse. If Pet is a story about a world of heroes with hidden monsters, this is a world of monsters with hidden heroes. https://youtu.be/-iqu8cQ5omE

Ms.Story Ohhhhh, this sounds interesting! I‘m becoming interested in the use of art as protest, which this sounds like it might be about?! 2y
mdemanatee @Ms.Story It definitely plays in to things but in a little bit more symbolic way than some of the other parts of the novel. Definitely lots of layers to dig into for conversation in this one! 2y

I've slowed down a bit in my reading, but I have made some progress. I didn't like Bitter as much as Pet, and it feels more... relevant, very close to the bone. It's a very quick, compulsive read, though.

Not entirely sure what I think of this right now. I remember liking Pet a lot, but this isn't clicking with me as well, though I couldn't tell you why.
