Why did I love this. 🤨

It‘s an easy flintlock fantasy read.

There are 3 MCs and most chapters flip back and forth between Marcus & Winter‘s POV.

Winter has runaway from the orphan girls prison and is currently hiding out & masquerading as a young man in the military. She just wants to go unnoticed but gets field promotions that put her in the spotlight.

It‘s well written and the characters are likable.

1. The Thousand Names (book one of Shadow Campaigns) by Django Wexler.

I‘m a bit all over the place so I have a few others in different states of completion.

2. Tulip - reminds me of my mom.

3. Work & housework, basically just thankless unpaid work. 😆

I normally don‘t enjoy military based fiction but I really enjoyed this despite that. I found Marcus and Winter to be relatable POV characters that I was compelled to root for. I‘m also intrigued by the magic system and will definitely read on to find out more about this world.

I had a very slow reading week because things got a little hectic here. It also doesn't help that I've only managed to find time to get to 17% of the tagged.

My entire goal this week is to finish Thousand Names in which I have around 400 pages to go. IF I can finish that I want to make headway in Obelisk Gate because that is the last of my March commitments I need to finish.

Reading in the car while my mom gets her first dose of vaccine. Can‘t wait for my turn to be eligible. My goal was to finish this book by Sunday but at 500 pages left to go I‘m not sure that‘s going to happen.

I put the book down for like one minute and come back to find my spot taken. I‘m only like 13% in but I‘m enjoying it so far.

One came in the mail and the rest are digital from my library. My mom got an email saying the physical library won‘t open until August 😫

I love a good battle scene. Winter and Marcus can hold their own!

Winter's kick ass, and she'll need to be, but I don't blame her for being reticent about accepting the promotion to sergeant.

“There wasn't a man in the circle older than eighteen. They were all boys, barely off their farms or away from the Vordan City tenements, and underneath their smiles and bravado there was a nervous core that Winter recognised.“

“For warmth, the troops had to make do with horse and ox dung, which they now collected and hoarded like gold. It burned well enough, but Winter found the smell cut through even then congealed stink of her own unwashed body, and she hadn't bothered to kindle a blaze.“

“Winter realized for the first time that Graff was scared. She'd never seen him afraid before, at least not in battle. Only a thin veneer of military professionalism held him together. And he's a veteran. She looked around at the steady backs of the Seventh Company with a new respect.“

“The hilltop was dark with enemy horsemen gathering around a dozen black-clad priests who chose that moment to bring into their sweet, high song. They all hit subtly different notes, and the result was a ringing harmony that echoed down from the ridge with a weird unearthly beauty.“

Another #fantasy read on my Kindle. I‘ve been meaning to read more Classics and escapism as usual wins.

Warfare and a little magic. Religious conflict and political turmoil. Lots of secrets. There were multiple characters I liked and sympathized with. There were twists. But there are lots of battles. For some that might be tedious. I enjoyed this, I wasn't sure if I would going in but I knew I wanted to give it a try and I'm glad I did.

Full of action with a decent plot. Good variety of main characters and I hope to see and learn more about them in the upcoming books!
