End of Her: Racing Against Alzheimer's to Solve a Murder
End of Her: Racing Against Alzheimer's to Solve a Murder | Wayne Hoffman
3 posts | 1 read | 4 to read
Who was behind the brutal murder of my great-grandmother? wondered Wayne Hoffman, a New York City-based journalist and novelist. The crime wasn't just a family legend-it made headlines across Canada in 1913-but her killer had never been found. In The End of Her, Hoffman meticulously researches this century-old tragedy, while facing another: his mother's decline from Alzheimer's. Weaving back and forth between past and present, Hoffman invokes in dramatic detail the life and death of his immigrant great-grandmother in Winnipeg, and his mother's downward spiral. In the process, he discovers an extended family that has been scattered across thousands of miles for a hundred years. "Journalist Hoffman (Hard and two other novels) makes his nonfiction debut with a riveting account of his dual efforts to care for his aging mother and crack a century-old unsolved murder...Hoffman makes the details of his dogged research vivid...and his conclusions about the murder are convincing. Meanwhile, he movingly recounts his mother's increasing memory loss and overall decline. This is a unique addition to the cold case subgenre, and a powerful mix of true crime and family memoir." Publishers Weekly (starred review)"A murder mystery wrapped like a delicious knish around a familial love story. The End of Her is the story of a journalist attempting to solve the long-ago puzzle of who shot his great-grandmother in her bed in small-town Winnipeg in 1913. But the why of it is at the heart of this beautiful book. Wayne Hoffman throws himself into this old-fashioned shoe-leather reporting (a true education for budding journalists) because he wants to give his mother the gift of her history before he loses her completely to dementia. The book's portrayal of Alzheimer's is horrible and hilarious; Wayne's voice is warm, deeply loving, drily funny and thankfully unsentimental." -Marjorie Ingall, author of Mamaleh Knows Best "This is one of those rare, fine books that gives you two of the dearest gifts in literature: a story so consuming you forget time, and an author with the gift to spin, from these supposedly ordinary lives, a profound chronicle of identity, family, memory, and love-and suspense, too."-Boris Fishman, author of Savage Feast "Wayne Hoffman has produced a fascinating and compelling story of his family history. Meticulously researched and skillfully written, he brilliantly weaves together the mystery of his great-grandmother's murder long ago in Winnipeg, his nearly decade long search to find the truth about this tragic event, and his joyous and poignant relationship with his ailing mother that inspires him and propels his quest. In particular, his recreation of Winnipeg's impoverished immigrant quarter during first decades of the twentieth century and the various complexities that shaped the lives of his great-grandparents and relatives is an absorbing tale rich with detail and vivid personalities."-Allan Levine, Winnipeg historian and author of Seeking the Fabled City: The Canadian Jewish Experience

I love that my IRL bookclub reads both popular books and then some lesser known author/titles. This was one such book that while maybe not a Pulitzer Prize contender, I found the dual stories compulsive and unputdownable. When the author discovers his mom is in the early stages of dementia he sets out to uncover a family mystery dating back to 1913. His mother‘s grandmother was murdered in cold blood and the crime went unsolved. #JewishLit #Pride

thereadingpal I'm glad you liked it! Putting it on my tbr list 3y
BookNerd9906 I miss IRL book club! 3y

Cinfhen Thanks friends 🫶🏼🌈And I‘m really enjoying this little gem of a book @MoonWitch94 @thereadingpal @squirrelbrain I‘m a bit of a history nerd, so I‘m loving learning about early Jewish life in Winnipeg 🤓 3y
thereadingpal @Cinfhen JewishLit is very rare with Italian protagonists so I'd have to find pure History books to find out more about it in my country sigh. Or read about experiences out of my country 8) 3y
Cinfhen I need to think if I‘ve read JewishLit fiction or NF that i could recommend @thereadingpal I know I have … just need to remember 😬 3y
thereadingpal @Cinfhen if you do, do recommend :D 3y

You know it‘s going to be a GREAT day when you get #BookMail delivered to your door before 8am❣️ Tagged book is for IRL bookclub, Candy House is for #SummerToB22 and upcoming IRL bookclub and The Idiot because I never read it and I‘m preparing for its sequel Either/Or which will be part of #CampLitsy (I believe I have another book in route) but it‘s hard to keep track 🤪Happy Thursday, friends xx

BarbaraBB Happy you‘re joining for some #CampLitsy!! However the Egan is for #CampToB (and your IRL bookclub if I remember well). 3y
Cinfhen Ha!!! That‘s funny @BarbaraBB / I told you my brain is 🙄 3y

BarbaraBB Not true, you always remember everything! 3y
Cinfhen Nope, not lately @BarbaraBB 😬😘Hope you had a good night. 3y
BarbaraBB I read you mention that. I‘ve been wondering. Will email soon. I slep very well, a bit reassured! 😘 3y
squirrelbrain Phew, I had a slight panic then! 🤣 3y
Cinfhen Hahaha @squirrelbrain I better correct my above text 😁 3y
BkClubCare Yay 👏 3y
squirrelbrain You didn‘t need to fix it - I‘m sure no-one else would have noticed! 3y
Laughterhp I‘m glad you said that, because I didn‘t know Either/ Or was a sequel. So now I have to read the Idiot first for #CampLitsy too. 3y
Megabooks I have to read The Idiot too. So glad you‘re joining us for Camp Litsy! My library has it, but there‘s a wait, so I may end up buying too. I enjoyed The Candy House, but it‘s also a sequel. Have you read 3y
Megabooks Also I‘m totally going through an Egan phase! 3y
Cinfhen So I was told by my bookclub friend that Candy House can be read as a stand alone but it might be more enjoyable if you read Goon Squad @Megabooks I actually bailed on Goon so that‘s why I wasn‘t really interested in reading 3y
Cinfhen I was a little surprised people voted for a sequel @Laughterhp but I guess most people have read 3y
AmyG @Cinfhen If it helps, if you try Goon Squad again, I remember that this book didn‘t come together for me until I got to the end....when I realized how much I liked this book. 3y
Cinfhen I‘ll keep that in mind @AmyG but first im waiting to hear from @Megabooks if it‘s necessary to read Goon!! 3y
Megabooks It‘s not necessary. I read Goon 8 years ago, so it wasn‘t fresh in my head, and I did fine. I think it probably would‘ve been better experience if I had reread it, but no, it can work as a standalone. 3y
Megabooks I just bit the bullet and ordered The Idiot. I‘m not going to be able to read an over 400 page book on my kindle. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I ordered the new Perrotta too. That‘s it until the end of June though!! 3y
Cinfhen Ok!! Good to know - thanks @Megabooks I‘ll probably skip a retry of Goon. Also the new Perotta is also a sequel 😁 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I know! Election is one of my favorite movies and I loved the book too!! 3y
britt_brooke Weirdly enough, I‘m currently reading The Idiot. 3y
Cinfhen What do you think so far @britt_brooke ? 3y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen I‘m not super far in, but I‘m intrigued. We‘ll see! 😅 3y
Cinfhen Awaiting your review @britt_brooke 🫶🏼 3y
