Geillis Duncan was a 15 yo girl, hanged as a witch in Scotland during the reign of James VI. And this is basically an ode to her. And all women. It caught my eye at a bookstore in Edinburgh. 😍

This took some time for me to get into, but the pace picked up and I became more engrossed and disturbed as the story approached its conclusion. This is the story of a 15 year old girl on the eve of her execution for witchcraft. This supports my belief that history holds much worse horrors than the most creative writer‘s imagination. How far as a modern society have we come? This book reminds me the answer is not far enough.

Set in the 16th century in underground Edinburgh this story follows Geillis on the night before she is to be executed for witchcraft. She has a visitor called Iris from the future. The conversations between the two women are utterly heartbreaking and powerful depicting the similarities between how women were treated then and still are now
The writing is beautiful and emotional, I will never forget this

Damn you, Jenni Fahan. How do you do it? How can you make us feel the fear and pain of a 15 year old girl from 1591? And I must say that my complete dislike and frankly, hatred of James VI & I continues to grow.
