She's restoring the old family home on the hill. And unearthing something evil.In the tourist town of Wharton, on the coast of Lake Superior, Tess Bell is renovating her old family home into a bed-and-breakfast during the icy dead of winter...As the house's restoration commences, a shuttered art studio is revealed. Inside are paintings Tess's late grandfather, beloved and celebrated artist Sebastian Bell, hid away for generations. But these appear to be the works of a twisted mind, almost unrecognizable as paintings she and others familiar with his art would expect. The sinister canvases raise disturbing questions for Tess, sparking nightmares and igniting in her an obsession to unearth the truth around their origins. What evil has been locked away for so many years? The ominous brushstrokes, scratching at the door, and moving shadows begin to pull Tess further and further into the darkness in this blood-chilling novel of suspense by the #1 Amazon Charts bestselling author of The Keepers of Metsan Valo.

4️⃣🎨🖌 Tess is turning her family vacation home into a B&B. The back room has been boarded up her whole life. During renovations, the room is opened to discover her grandfathers art studio & hidden disturbing paintings. She hears scratching at night & has weird dreams which leads to questions about what happened in the room & is something trapped in there. Half cozy strangers to lovers, half horror, I loved how things developed & were revealed.❄️

A quick, pleasant read. A little creepy and a lot cozy. Ghosts scratching in the night, snowshoeing and a winter picnic on the shore of Lake Superior during the day.

Fans of horror probably wouldn't like this fairly tame haunted house story but I'm good with things not getting too gruesome. Tess is turning her family home into a B&B but the closed up space that should be the owners suite has a few issues. Enter the handyman descended from the town's founders* and the ghost busting neighbor who, eventually, set everything right and solve a couple town mysteries. It's a soft pick for me.

bookandbedandtea *The story Wyatt told Tess about how his ancestor came to settle the area was a far more compelling story, one I'd gladly read in full. 1y
Bklover I thought this was enjoyable, but very strange. I couldn‘t quite decide whether it was a mystery, a romance, or a horror story. And I‘m with @bookandbedandtea - I liked the Wyatt story too. 1y
bookandbedandtea @Bklover Yes- it dipped its toe in a few genres but didn't commit to any of them. I did enjoy it despite, or maybe because, of that but still find myself most intrigued to know exactly what happened to John Wharton centuries ago. I'm glad I'm not the only one. 😊 1y

I liked the ghost story elements and the mystery, but the romantic subplot was a little annoying. Too much Hallmark channel feel for what i wanted to be a creepy haunted house story... I'm giving it a pick because it was fast paced and kept me engaged, but its a low pick.

This book was quite the ride. The main character went about her life, having dinner with the neighbors, fixing up her house to turn it into a B&B, taking her dog for a walk, calling her son and her parents, meeting someone, all while something lurked ominously in the background. It was quite the build up, and I didn't want to stop reading until the end.

This is a KU First Read and I have to say if you‘re into the gothic, dark, spooky and mysterious you‘ll enjoy this read. Really engaging characters and enough suspense and spooky to keep you reading ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

Some of the #AmazonFirstReads have been hit or miss but I am really enjoying this one. I discovered it when I was looking for a replacement for my first #TBRTarot pick, which was just not for me (Wolf Winter). Plan on finishing this up tonight!

My two Amazon First Picks for the month. The tagged book is a gothic novel set on the coast of Lake Superior, where Tess Bell is trying to turn an inherited home into a B&B. She unearths disturbing paintings in the art studio & starts having nightmares & hearing scratching at the door. In Keeper of Enchanted Rooms, an author inherits a house that has decided to lock him in. He consults an expert who moves in & teaches him to befriend the house.
