Lessons in Fusion: A Novel | Primrose Madayag Knazan
5 posts | 3 read | 6 to read
Sixteen-year-old Sarah (it's pronounced SAH-rah, thank you) has a successful blog creating fusion recipes. When Sarah is invited to compete on Cyber Chef, a virtualcooking competition, her twists on her Baba's recipes are not enough to pique the palate of the show's producers. She is pushed to present dishes that represent her Filipinx culture, but these flavours are foreign to her since her parents raisedher emphatically Jewish. To survive Cyber Chef and find her cultural identity, Sarah must discover why her mother turned her back on all things Filipinx, and learn the true meaning of fusion.

I have to say I don't usually love stories that take on social issues so directly, but this one was enjoyable! The main character is so likable and the cooking competition reality show was a lot of fun. And such good food descriptions! Thanks to @MeganAnn and her #AuldLangSpine list for bringing it to my attention! Also thanks to @monalyisha !

MeganAnn I‘m glad you liked it!! 😊 The food descriptions and cooking competition had me hooked. And I appreciated the way the author handled the issues in this one. 9mo

This has been patiently waiting on my shelf since January when I bought it for #auldlangspine
I picked it up this morning and have spent the entire day reading, swept up in Sarah‘s (pronounced SAH-reh) story of food, family and finding her cultural identity. I‘ve stumbled across a few books recently that dealt with themes of family and food, how love is expressed through food and also culture. This was the perfect fit to continue those themes.⬇️

MeganAnn I think perhaps I would have loved it no matter when I read it. But today it feels especially right, like the book knew I needed to wait for now to put it all together. All this to say I loved this book! It‘s going on my favorites list for the year and I‘m going to recommend it to so many people! @xicanti ‘s review is also excellent if you want more info - check it out! 1y

😍 this excellent #auldlangspine list from @xicanti 🎉
I haven‘t read a single book off this list yet, but several are on my TBR. There‘s also several new to me titles that look fascinating including the tagged book.

The tagged + The Archive of Alternate Endings are the two new titles I‘m most excited about. Hoping for some Xmas book money to order them. Everything else pictured my library has. The rest on the list aren‘t available to me now. ⬇️

MeganAnn @xicanti I love some of the similarities between our lists! We both have a different Colson Whitehead book on our list. And a variety of romance titles. Alexis Hall‘s Boyfriend Material almost made it on my list as well! (If I had 21 spots it would‘ve been there, but it was a tough call to narrow down). The description of Exciting Times reminds a little bit of Fault Lines off my list even though they‘re different storylines. 2y
xicanti I‘m really glad you gave me to push to read more Whitehead in January. My first experience with him was awesome. He doesn‘t care about the reader‘s comfort at all if it‘d mean masking the truth, and I really respect that. I hope you‘ll love The Underground Railroad too, and find some other stuff to love! Good luck sourcing the two that caught your eye but aren‘t at the library! 2y
MeganAnn @xicanti yes, I feel the same way about Whitehead! The Nickel Boys was awesome and I‘ve been meaning to pick up The Underground Railroad but keep putting it off because I know it‘s not a comfortable read. I‘m so glad we can give each other that push too. 2y

I hadn‘t heard of LESSONS IN FUSION before it caught my eye on the shelf, but it sucked me straight in. There‘s so much here: delicious food, strong families with rough patches, cool friendships, Judaism, intense Winnipegness, pandemic realities, and a lot about tokenism in media. Primrose Madayag Knazan‘s characters make the best choices they know how to make—and when they mess up, they learn to do better. 4.5 stars.

xicanti Also of note: this is a YA novel where the protagonist is invested in connecting with her family and winning a cooking show, not finding love. I know a lot of y‘all want more books in that vein. 2y

I‘m hoping to sink into this Jewish Filipinx-Canadian reality cooking show novel tonight! Casey agrees it‘s off to a promising start. He‘s promised not to lick it while I read, even though it‘s a big ask. Something on the spine calls to him.
