Louise Erdrich meets Jo Nesbø in this spellbinding Swedish novel that follows a young indigenous woman as she struggles to defend her family’s reindeer herd and culture amidst xenophobia, climate change, and a devious hunter whose targeted kills are considered mere theft in the eyes of the law. It is winter, north of the Arctic Circle. A few hours of pale light are all the sun has to offer before the landscape is once more wrapped in darkness. This the land of the Sámi, Scandinavia’s indigenous people. One day when she goes skiing along, nine-year-old Elsa—daughter of reindeer herders—witnesses a man brutally killing her reindeer calf, Nástegallu. Elsa is threatened into silence and refuses to tell anyone about what she saw, but she carries her secret as a dark weight on her heart. Not only are the reindeer the Sámi’s livelihood, but the animals also serve an important spiritual role; attacking a reindeer is an attack on the culture itself. Even though she’s just a child, Elsa sees how persistent violence among neighbors and indifference from authorities cause those close to her to lose hope, and even their will to live. Ten years later, Elsa tries to find her way in her community, where male elders expect young women to know their place. Meanwhile, the hatred and threats against the Sámi keep escalating. When Elsa finds herself the target of the man who killed her reindeer calf all those years ago, something inside of her finally breaks, leading her to a final catastrophic confrontation. Stolen portrays a young woman’s struggle to defend her heritage in a world where xenophobia is on the rise, climate change looms, and young people choose suicide in the face of collective desperation. The novel also portrays the tensions that arise when modern ideas come up against a traditional culture. In Elsa, award-winning writer Ann-Helén Laestadius has created unforgettable young heroine, fighting for honor, acceptance, and defending her way of life in a community under attack. Part coming-of-age story, part love song to a disappearing natural world, and part electrifying countdown to a dramatic resolution, Stolen is sweeping storytelling at its best.

Elsa, a 9-year-old Sámi girl, is witness to her reindeer‘s murder. The murderer threatens to kill her too if she says anything. The animals continue to be tortured and killed. The Swedish police do nothing. A gripping tale that spans decades in Elsa‘s life, portraying the joys and challenges of contemporary Indigenous life in northern Sweden. #Translation by Rachel Willson Broyles

TrishB I can read serial killer books, but animals being murdered, nope. 11mo
Lindy @TrishB Not just murdered, tortured. That aspect is hard to take, but so is the discrimination against Sámi people and the callous indifference of the police and townspeople. 11mo
TrishB That sounds terrible too 😞 11mo

The reindeer were biekka oapmi, belonging to the wind. Áddjá had explained this to her carefully when she was little.

I don‘t think I‘m going to make it. At about 1/4 of the way through, the book isn‘t keeping my interest. It could be a Taylor issue where I‘m the problem, but for now, I‘m taking a break from reindeer murders…✌ï¸

ErikasMindfulShelf Oh no. I really liked this one. I read it in Swedish so maybe some things got lost in translation. 1y
Erinreadsthebooks @ErikasMindfulShelf I think it‘s just unfortunate timing. If I see this book out in the wild, I‘ll definitely pick it up and give it another try. 1y

I‘m in an “in between books†rut that is really getting the best of me. The ability to focus and latch onto a book has been missing since I finished my last read. Seriously hoping one of these guys pulls me out of it. BOTM and ALLLLLL the library holds arrived at the same time. Good thing my library is pretty forgiving when it comes to late fees 🤪

Such a great book! Could not stop reading it. Action is set in an Indigenous village in northern Sweden. Someone has been killing Saami's reindeers for years and police does not seem to care...

"Listen to this: 'I meet two young Sámi women who don't dare be photographed; the hate they will face is too great a threat."" ....

Minna read in silence and laughed out loud.
"Well, he sure can paint a picture. And no surprise, he uses words like 'lawless land' and 'wilderness. Good thing we have both ICA and Coop to buy groceries out here in the wilderness. How else would we survive?"

"Where's the bathroom?" Ãhkku asked loudly.

She didn't like speaking Swedish; she had trouble making the intonation and the consonants come out right.

According to Ãhkku, Swedish was missing the melody of the heart.

SamAnne I hope to start this one soon! 2y

Dark story about the reality of the Sami reindeer herders in Sweden. 9-year-old Elsa sees a man killing her calf. Local authorities do nothing to stop the killings, and adult Elsa‘s anger will push her toward action of her own. https://cannonballread.com/2023/02/stolen-a-novel-elcicco/

Fantastic read about a young Sami woman and her family. Devastating and heartbreaking. Broke my heart to see another indigenous people be treated so harshly. Very glad I read this!

#NetGalley

What a great read! This book is a mash-up of genres, but it all comes together for a propulsive, heartfelt read.

We start when Elsa is nine and she witnesses something horrific. As she gets older she grows tired of the treatment she, and her family face. I loved this coming-of-age thriller that brings the reader into an indigenous culture that I didn't know much about.

Bklover Sounds good!!! 2y
