Most people don't realize the base of the Statue of Liberty wasn't part of France's gift. Instead it was paid for by multiple fundraisers- including many donated works by authors, poets, and artists. 'The New Colossus' was one such poem. The poet, Emma Lazarus, was a Jewish activist who (while not an immigrant herself) was familiar with being an outsider. Her poem was mostly forgotten until after her death, but now hangs in the Statue's base.

Does the government shutdown mean I don't have to pay my taxes? Sheesh...

I just want to show you all my favorite poem of all time. I get chills and tear up every goddamn time I read it. For those who are unfamiliar, this was the poem that was mounted at the base of the Statue of Liberty, the place where millions of immigrants first set foot in America. Whenever I get overwhelmed at the state of current political affairs, I turn to this poem, which I consider to be the pledge of the true American. ✨🇺🇸
