The Mostly True Story of Tanner & Louise
The Mostly True Story of Tanner & Louise | Colleen Oakley
A “wildly surprising, entertaining” (Jodi Picoult) novel featuring a college dropout and an eighty-four-year-old woman on the run from the law, full of tremendous heart, wit, and wisdom from the USA Today bestselling author of The Invisible Husband of Frick Island. Twenty-one-year-old Tanner Quimby needs a place to live. Preferably one where she can continue sitting around in sweatpants and playing video games nineteen hours a day. Since she has no credit or money to speak of, her options are limited, so when an opportunity to work as a live-in caregiver for an elderly woman falls into her lap, she takes it. One slip on the rug. That’s all it took for Louise Wilt’s daughter to demand that Louise have a full-time nanny living with her. Never mind that she can still walk fine, finish her daily crossword puzzle, and pour the two fingers of vodka she drinks every afternoon. Bottom line: Louise wants a caretaker even less than Tanner wants to be one. The two start off their living arrangement happily ignoring each other until Tanner starts to notice things—weird things. Like, why does Louise keep her garden shed locked up tighter than a prison? And why is the local news fixated on the suspect of one of the biggest jewelry heists in American history who looks eerily like Louise? And why does Louise suddenly appear in her room, with a packed bag at 1 a.m. insisting that they leave town immediately? Thus begins the story of a not-to-be-underestimated elderly woman and an aimless young woman who—if they can outrun the mistakes of their past—might just have the greatest adventure of their lives.

A fun road trip mystery adventure with a young woman and an old woman. I liked watching their relationship and how they helped each other along the way. Not a very complicated story but the plot was interesting and the writing was solid.

A fun light read with a friendship between an early 20‘s woman, Tanner, who is disgruntled with life after an injury ends her college soccer career, and Louise, an octogenarian who may be on the run from the law for a jewel theft and from an old enemy.

It‘s a little bit road trip story, a little bit friendship meet cute with two grouchy characters, and there‘s a smidge of romance.

I liked this, and the narration was very good.

Hooked_on_books I really liked this one, too. I‘ve been thinking for a while between your upheaval lately and my not knowing when a move might happen, do you want to scale our gifting back to one book + one item? Or even skip Christmas altogether? I figure the holiday could either be a burden for you or a nice treat so I wasn‘t sure whether to suggest this or not. Let me know what you think. 1mo
Soubhiville @Hooked_on_books I‘ve already shopped, which was a nice treat. Please don‘t feel you have to send a large box to me though- I enjoy shopping for others as it‘s own joy. The groundbreaking on my property is happening in the next week or two, house should be done in June, finally 😆. So anyway I‘ll be sending you a package, but no pressure on you. Hope everything is going well for you! 1mo
Hooked_on_books Oh that‘s great! I just thought with the mess from the hurricane there it would be really hard on you and didn‘t want you to feel burdened, so I‘m glad that‘s not the case. I don‘t feel pressured at all—I love shopping for you since you love books as much as I do and no one else on my shopping list really fits that bill. I‘m really glad things are in a good place for you. 1mo

Soubhiville @Hooked_on_books Things are going well. My shop has a new building being renovated, and until it‘s ready in a month or so we‘ve been loaned space to work in. I‘ve been able to work almost full time the last couple weeks, and it‘s been busy with the holiday rush. (Our water boiling notice just got lifted after 55 days, so that feels pretty great too!) 1mo
Hooked_on_books That‘s so good to hear. I‘ve been picking up news reports from time to time to see how things are going. I know some rebuilding will take years. I have no doubt the community will support one another and that‘s so good. Ultimately, there‘s the potential to make the community even stronger. Plus it‘s good for you to be back into a closer to normal schedule again. I‘m sure that feels good. 1mo
Soubhiville @Hooked_on_books I‘m glad you‘re seeing some news about it still. The flooded areas still look really bad, though in some of the commercial areas and the arts district cleanup crews- mostly owners and volunteers- have been working really hard and there is improvement. A lot of the folks who lost homes have been given temporary sheds, RVs, or tiny homes, but many are still in tents, especially if they don‘t want to move from their property. 1mo
Soubhiville There are a lot of organizations working very hard to get folks housed, but more help and funds are needed. Also so many people working to feed people for free, make sure their basic needs are met. Of course on the other hand, evictions are starting to happen due to job losses. It‘s a mess, and it will take a long time to clean up. Lots of seeing the good and the not so good in humanity. 1mo
Hooked_on_books I‘ve watched some of what‘s gone on in Lahaina and it‘s been so ugly. And basically not at all publicized, even here. Our media has such a short attention span and I feel it does us such a disservice. People need to better understand how long this really takes. But I‘m glad to hear about the work of volunteers. Some of those organizations are pretty amazing. 1mo

Such a fun road trip, found family, unlikely friendship, caper! I adored Louise and loved the slow reveal of her past experiences that come back to upend this octogenarian's life.

This was a fun and funny roadtrip story. Twenty-one year old Tanner loses her college soccer scholarship and gets a job as a live-in driver/caregiver for eighty-four year old Louise. Before she knows what she‘s gotten herself into, she has snuck out of the house in the middle of the night with Louise for a cross country adventure of a lifetime. Some hilarious moments as each learn from one another and form an unlikely friendship.

Suet624 I liked this one too. 9mo

I was so completely absorbed in this book that I missed all the warnings that the tide was about to wash over me. Don't worry, I saved my kobo in lightening speed. There is one thread that didn't get tied up at the end that is bothering me. This book got me out of a short 2 book slump as it was different from what I had been reading and it was engrossing.

Wanted to love this more than I did. Great idea! Louise - a woman in her eighties with a mysterious past - and Tanner - a 21-year-old who dropped out of college after an injury - become unlikely friends and go on an adventure together. Unfortunately, Tanner felt so flat and some choices she made (mostly stupidity needed to advance the plot) didn't feel true to character. (1/2)

Tea_and_Starstuff This is made all the more obvious by the fact that Louise is lovely and well-drawn. I feel like the author had more connection with her than with Tanner. The relationship between the two started so abrasive, and stayed that way through at least half the book. I was wanting more odd-couple friendship, and that was slow in coming. I pushed through, but it was a slog. (2/2)

A fun story of an 81 year old woman, sharp as a tack, on the run with the assistance of a confused young adult just trying to figure out what to do with her life. A lighthearted and quick read.

84 year old Louise is recovering from hip surgery and needs help getting to appointments. 21 year old soccer phenom Tanner needs money (and a break from her family) to get back to college after a career-ending injury. This is such a fun book—great characters, plot, and a road trip involving this unlikely pair, uncovering secrets along the way. And good humor!

I loved this! The MCs are 21 and 84 which pulled me in right away. The characters were charming and well-developed, and the story had a great flow. I didn‘t give thought to what might happen next because I was so entertained in the moment which then lead to surprises at each funny twist and turn. It‘s among my favorite reads this year!

Here are my Feb plans for #bookspin #doublespin. I am reading the tagged book now, so I may finish that before the end of this month. Most of these are beige or pink spines on my shelf.
