A Splash of Red: The Life and Art of Horace Pippin
A Splash of Red: The Life and Art of Horace Pippin | Jen Bryant

A Robert F. Sibert Honor Book Winner of the Schneider Family Book Award An ALA-ALSC Notable Children's Book Winner of the NCTE Orbis Pictus Award for Outstanding Nonfiction for Children As a child in the late 1800s, Horace Pippin loved to draw: He loved the feel of the charcoal as it slid across the floor. He loved looking at something in the room and making it come alive again in front of him. He drew pictures for his sisters, his classmates, his co-workers. Even during W.W.I, Horace filled his notebooks with drawings from the trenches . . . until he was shot. Upon his return home, Horace couldn't lift his right arm, and couldn't make any art. Slowly, with lots of practice, he regained use of his arm, until once again, he was able to paint--and paint, and paint! Soon, peopleincluding the famous painter N. C. Wyethstarted noticing Horace's art, and before long, his paintings were displayed in galleries and museums across the country. Jen Bryant and Melissa Sweet team up once again to share this inspiring story of a self-taught painter from humble beginnings who despite many obstacles, was ultimately able to do what he loved, and be recognized for who he was: an artist. From the Hardcover edition.

I like this book a lot and would use it in my classroom when my students are learning about artists and their life stories. The colors in this book are vibrant and the way in which the illustrations were created makes it look like they were drawn and collaged together.

Biography. His book looks into the life of Horace pippin a self taught African American painter. Pippin loved to draw pictures for pretty much anyone and everyone. Even when he got shipped off to fight in WW1 he drew pictures. Until one day something unfortunate happens. But Horace perseveres because of his love for painting.

Published in 2013, the children's biography is based around the life and adventures of Horace Pippin and his art. Even through tragedy, Pippin was still able to pick back up his paintbrush and practice his art. A really great book about art and history with amazing illustrations.

“More than forty years passed since Horace won his first box of paints. Now, at last, everyone knew he was an artist.”

blurb

This was super interesting because I have never heard of this artist before. This would be great for children to expand their knowledge and inspire them to be artists themselves.

Just finished a Sunday morning read with my son. I never heard of Horace Pippin before reading this so it was a delight for both of us. The illustrations are lovely. When we finished we looked up and discovered some of his art is displayed in our local museum so we can actually go see it. Have a wonderful Sunday! #picturebooks #readsoullit

A Splash of Red: The Life and Art of Horace Pippin helps introduce the concept of biographies in a way that is comprehensible for children. Melissa Stewart did an amazing job illustrating this book and adding so much color and vibrancy to the pages. This biography has been recognized as a Robert F. Sibert Honor and has received the Schneider Family Book Award. https://www.jenbryant.com/books/inprint/bk_splashred.html. #UCFLAE3414SP18

Laura.S This book aligns with UDL principle 3.2 as it highlights big ideas such as he life story of people. It also correlated with EL 6 because teachers should be keeping up with students comprehension of biographies. 6y
Laura.S I would use this book as an author study to see if this author wrote any other biographies. The research would then lead them to similar titles. 6y
DrSpalding Yes! Fantastic post. I was present when this book won the Sibert award and immediately had to purchase it. This is an excellent example of a biography and I truly like that you used the author‘s website as your resource. Excellent UDL/EL alignment. 6y

Having won the Sibert award, this book highlights milestones in Horace Pippin‘s life in the most aesthetically pleasing way. I would recommend using this book for GR, but it could easily be a RA.

This Orbis Pictus and Sibert award winning biography is great for partner reading in older classrooms! It is about the life of a man named Horace and his struggles growing up! After the students read I would have them answers these questions with their partner https://www.islma.org/Monarch-2016-files/islma/SplashOfRed.pdf

MakennaK I would use ESOL 2, promote cooperation in small groups, since we will be doing partner work which will be beneficial to them! I'll use UDL 3.4, maximize transfer and generalization, in order to really help them understand the life of Horace! I also got the idea to look into this book because of a book boost that was done in my class 6y
MeghanW I think this is a great story. I loved how you would put the students in small groups to work on questions! It can help students who didn‘t exactly understand the story. 6y

A Splash of Red: The Life and Art of Horace Pippin was the NF 2014 Orbis Pictus award winner written by Jen Bryant and illustrated by Melissa Sweet. This beautiful PB, perfect for IR, displays the life of the famous artist, Horace Pippin and how his hard work and patience brought him to his success. UDL 4.2- optimize access to assistive technologies (since a bit lengthy, offer an audio resource to read along with)

farynantenucci EL 42- have students use timelines to arrange facts and info. I also found this detailed teacher resource: https://www.islma.org/Monarch-2016-files/islma/SplashOfRed.pdf that has several activities to pair with this book from art to writing to math and many other subjects. #ucflae3414f17 (edited) 7y

Susancruz This children‘s book shows kids to always work hard and always do what you love even in the darkest of times when it seems like you can‘t anymore.
This book meets UDL 1.3 and 3.1 which offer alternatives for visual information and activate or supply background knowledge. As well as EL 2 as you can promote small group work discussing the book and the pictures.

I love good art biographies for kids. This is a great read for grade schoolers. It would be fun to read this and discuss the use of color in paintings.
Hmmm. Maybe we need a kid's book club where we read biographies and create similar style art work. Maybe partner with our local university art students?
