This modern fantasy short novel is apart of my favorite childhood book series! It is perfect for Elementary schoolers who are just starting to read chapter books! I would use this as independent reading to help them get introduced into chapter books! This is the first book in the series and is about Jack and Annie, two siblings, who travel back into the time of the dinosaurs!

MakennaK I will use the authors website https://www.magictreehouse.com and have the kids go through and interact with it because it has some amazing and fun activities for each book! I'll use UDL 5.1, use multimedia for communication, since I will have them interact with her website. I'll use ELL 1, teach questioning for clarification, since it will be their first time using chapter books! #ucflae3414f17 7y
ashley.v I used to love magic treehouse as well. I still do and i confess i still read them occasionally. I definitely want some for my classroom!! 7y
SavannahP0930 These books were the best! A lot of time travel books were so cheesy but this series feels so real and exciting! Great book choice 7y

This realistic fiction Corretta Scott King award winning book is another book the is perfect for literature circles in upper middle school. It is about a teenage boy who accidentally kills his best friend when drunk driving. I would use this book in my classroom to teach a lesson and educate my students about this topic. I would show them this drunk driving awareness video that is related to the topic of the book. https://youtu.be/NVJba-2WYEM

MakennaK I will use ELL 11, place language in meaningful context, to really help them understand the message of the book. I'll use UDL 9.3, develop reflection, and have my students reflect and think about the message and lesson in this beautiful book. #ucflae3414f17 7y
DrSpalding Thank you for noting the fact that these books are more appropriate for middle and or high school. She is an amazing author. 11 is perfect! 7y

This fiction Ezra and Corretta Scott King award winner picture book is an amazing book. I will definitely use this book in my classroom and I chose it because I am a dancer and Misty Copeland is one of my idols! I would use this as an author study in my classroom. I will use an AS because I want my students to do research on Misty to see how amazing she is. After we read the book I will show my students her documentary https://youtu.be/BqZkfDEoQDI

MakennaK I would use ELL 7, show students how to use graphic organizers. This will be used to help them write information about Misty. I will use UDL 5.1, use multimedia for communication, since I will show them her video documentary! I love Misty Copeland so I hope I can get my students to love her as well. #ucflae3414f17 7y
DominiqueL I love choosing books that not only the students will like but also I could connect with. One book I would show to my class was also introduced to me in the 3rd grade and the author was a local author in my hometown. I feel like our excitement about the books we share will definitely inspire them as well! 7y

This fiction picture book is the winner of a Theodore Suess Geisel Award! It is perfect for read alouds in Kindergarten Classrooms because it is very helpful for emergent readers. It is about a pig and a fox and all of the trouble they get into so it is a fun read for younger kids! https://youtu.be/Xs6ggKvZEQw this video is a read aloud that I would show my students to help their comprehension after I have completed my read aloud.

MakennaK I would use UDL 5.1, use multimedia for communication, since I will be showing them a video for the read aloud. I will use ELL 6, continually monitor students comprehension, because this is a book to help students who are just learning how to read. #ucflae3414f17 7y

This Orbis Pictus and Sibert award winning biography is great for partner reading in older classrooms! It is about the life of a man named Horace and his struggles growing up! After the students read I would have them answers these questions with their partner https://www.islma.org/Monarch-2016-files/islma/SplashOfRed.pdf

MakennaK I would use ESOL 2, promote cooperation in small groups, since we will be doing partner work which will be beneficial to them! I'll use UDL 3.4, maximize transfer and generalization, in order to really help them understand the life of Horace! I also got the idea to look into this book because of a book boost that was done in my class 7y
MeghanW I think this is a great story. I loved how you would put the students in small groups to work on questions! It can help students who didn‘t exactly understand the story. 7y

This RF Sibert Award winning books Is such a sweet picture Book! It is about a little boy named Peter who goes out in the snow and has a great adventure! I would use this book with story telling because it is meant for younger students and it will be fun for them to see me acting it out! I would use this activity https://growingbookbybook.com/snowy-day-book-writing-activity/ which will help kids get the idea of snow.

MakennaK I'll use UDL 1.1, offer ways of customizing the display of information. This will help kids learn about snow since we are in Florida and they probably have limited information about it. I'd use ELL 1, teach questioning for clarification, again to help with teaching them about snow. #ucflae3414f17 7y
DrSpalding This would make an excellent storytelling to teach students about snow. I agree! You could then connect this to a science lesson! 7y
Brittanyradzak I‘ve heard many great things about this book, I need to have it! I love how you included a writing activity in your resource and Dr. Spalding mentioned about including this book in science. It‘s great how this book can be used in different subjects! 7y

This RF Coretta Scott King award winning book would be perfect for LC. This book is about a young teen who is trying to go throughout his life while struggling with the death of his aunt. This book is definitely for older students so I would use LC for them to talk about their feelings about the book in them. I would show my students this book trailer to get them excited to read. https://youtu.be/jGqE9UaIxMM

MakennaK I would use UDL 7.1, optimize choice and autonomy, by having the students choose what they will talk about in their LC since they are older. I'll use UDL 2, promote cooperation in small groups, by having the students engaging in deep discussion in their LC. #UCFLAE3414f17 7y
DrSpalding Yes, definitely for middle to high school students however your idea of using it with literature circles and promoting cooperation works perfectly. 7y

This RF New York Times Best Seller award book is perfect for a class read aloud. It is about a little girl who who finds out that there has never been a women president before! She does not like this a decides to run for class president against one of the most popular kids in school! I would intertwine this book in with a history lesson issuing this lesson plan. https://www.teachervision.com/us-elections/how-president-gets-elected

MakennaK I would use UDL 5.1, use multi media for communication and show my student videos about how elections work along with the book. I'd use ELL 9, place language in meaningful context, since there will be a lot of new vocabulary words. #ucflae3414f17 7y
DrSpalding This resource provides definitions for very difficult government related terms. This is an excellent read aloud that can teach your students a great deal about running for the highest office in the land. 7y
WendyP I love this book as a source to teach our students about the government! 7y
Brittanyradzak I think this is a fun way to teach students about the government and how elections work. This is really important because explaining how someone becomes the president can be kind of boring. 7y

This Fiction sunshine State Young Readers Award is perfect for story telling in the younger classrooms. It is a funny book about two little kids who decide to enter their 66 pugs in a dog sledding race! They go through lots of crazy adventure and ups and downs in this book! I think it's perfect for storytelling because you can use toys/animals to help act it out! The class will have a ball!

MakennaK I would use UDL 5.2, use multiple tools for construction and composition. This would incorporate into the stuffed animals I will use in storytelling. I will use ELL 14, simplify your speech by making it slower and redundant, when doing the storytelling. 7y

When I was little my sister and I were obsessed with the Titanic. This non-fiction book would be great to use as a read aloud in class. Since it is NF it would go along with a history lesson. http://www.scholastic.com/browse/lessonplan.jsp?id=198 I would use this activity for the students along with the book. They would use the book to collect information for their assignment!

MakennaK I would use UDL 6.3, facilitate managing I formation and resources, since the students will be doing research with this book and topic. I will use ED 16, integrate speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities, since we will be using all of these in the lesson. 7y

I was inspired to read this Caldecott winner biography from when someone did their Book Boost on it. I think the pictures in it are amazing and I would use this book along with story telling and a history lesson. I think that this would be a unique way to read the book. I would use this lesson plan as a guideline http://citadel.sjfc.edu/students/. This book is about her life of Harriet Tubman and how she helped her people to freedom!

MakennaK I would use UDL 3.1, activate or supply background knowledge, because this book will go along with a history lesson and students will need to know information on slavery. I will use EDL 4, link lesson topic to students' prior knowledge, for the same reason as stated above. 7y
JordanD Wow- it's obvious why this is a Caldecott winner- the picture is so vivid and realistic! It sounds like a compelling story and I like your strategies of activating background knowledge- this would be a great book to get kids interested in a lesson. I would use this book to help teach my students a lesson. https://youtu.be/Ob7fPOzbmzE I will show my students the trailer to the movie to get them motivated to read. After we read the novel I would take them to go see the movie!

MakennaK I would use UDL 5.1,use multimedia for communication, since we have the book and the movie! We will be integrating technology with the lesson. I would use it in an upper elementary class using shared reading! #ucflae3414f17

This is a Modern Fantasy novel that was one of my favorite books as a child! It's about a little girl named Matilda who is in her first year of school. All of the adults are mean to her and make fun of her intelligence. Matilda happens to have magical powers that she uses to stand up to the adults! I would use this book in my classroom for readers theater. Each kid would be a character and act out each chapter!

MakennaK https://youtu.be/A06-8IWjFSE. This is a YouTube video of Matilda the Musical on Broadway that I would show my students in order to hook their interest into the book! We could also use it for compare and contrast. ESOL 21, record your lectures, presentations, or stories on audiotape is perfect to use because I can record the students doing RT and have the ELLs watch it again later. 7y
MakennaK UDL 3.3, guide information processing, visual representations and manipulation, is perfect for this because I can use the Matilda Broadway clips and the Matilda movie clips in the lesson of the book to engage and extend students' understanding more! (edited) 7y

This RF New York Times Best Seller novel is an amazing read. This is one of my favorite books that I have read and would use it in LC in my classroom. It is about a little girl named Melody. She has cerebral Palsy but is very intelligent. She narrates the book and talks about her struggles and thoughts of her life. UDL 5.1, use multiple media for communication, is perfect for this book since Melody uses different forms of media to communicate!

MakennaK ESOL 10, teach think, pair and share in cooperative groups is a great strategy to use to get students to talk about their feelings about their book and find out how other students feel about the book! This video, https://youtu.be/nCG6e2DifxY, is a link to the book trailer. Again, it is a price of media which I think is a great tool to use with this book since Melody uses media in the book to communicate and to say what is on her mind! 7y

This is a picture book of poetry with beautiful illustrations and a great message! I would use this in a RA to teach students a lesson about diversity! It is about a kid who is wondering if things in life know what color they are. He says if they could be any color that they would be all the colors! At the end he realizes that everyone and everything is a different color, but that is ok! #lae3414f17

MakennaK I would use EL strategy 2, promote cooperation. During this, students will be able to talk to one another about diversity and discover new ideas and thoughts from other students! I would use UDL 2.4, promote understanding across languages, because it allows for more diversity and for all types of students to learn! 7y
AJones What a beautiful book! My kindergarteners would absolutely love Brynne Barnes' playful rhymes, and I like how she asks questions throughout the book. This strategy gets students thinking.
