Ship Beneath the Ice: The Discovery of Shackleton's Endurance
Ship Beneath the Ice: The Discovery of Shackleton's Endurance | Mensun Bound
6 posts | 4 read | 1 to read
"As thrilling as any tale from the heroic age of exploration. ... Bound's account is a triumph. The storytelling is piano-wire taut, the writing saturated with polar moodiness." ? Sunday TimesThe extraordinary story of how the Endurance, Ernest Shackleton's legendary lost ship, was found in the most hostile sea on Earth, told by the expedition's Director of Exploration. On November 21, 1914, after sailing more than ten thousand miles from Norway to the Antarctic Ocean, the Endurance finally succumbed to the surrounding ice. Ernest Shackleton and his crew had navigated the 144-foot, three-masted wooden vessel to Antarctica to become the first to cross the barren continent, but early season pack ice trapped them in place offshore. They watched in silence as the ship's stern rose twenty feet in the air and disappeared into the frigid sea, then spent six harrowing months marooned on the ice in its wake. Seal meat was their only sustenance as Shackleton's expedition to push the limits of human strength took a new form: one of survival against the odds. As this legendary story entered the annals of polar exploration, it inspired a new global race to find the wrecked Endurance, by all accounts "the world's most unreachable shipwreck." Several missions failed, thwarted, as Shackleton was, by the unpredictable Weddell Sea. Finally, a century to the day after Shackleton's death, renowned marine archeologist Mensun Bound and an elite team of explorers discovered the lost shipwreck. Nearly ten thousand feet below the ice lay a remarkably preserved Endurance, its name still emblazoned on the ship's stern. The Ship Beneath the Ice chronicles two dramatic expeditions to what Shackleton called "the most hostile sea on Earth." Bound experienced failure and despair in his attempts to locate the wreck, and, like Shackleton before him, very nearly found his vessel frozen in ice.Complete with captivating photos from the 1914 expedition and of the wreck as Bound and his team found it, this inspiring modern-day adventure narrative captures the intrepid spirit that joins two mariners across the centuries--both of whom accomplished the impossible.

Catching up on the weekends reading- this was my #doublespin for Aug and I found it absolutely riveting! Probably not for everyone but I found it genuinely suspenseful & also enjoyed the extracts from various diaries of those on the original Endurance expedition!

TheAromaofBooks Ooooo I am definitely going to get a copy of this for my husband! He and my dad and my brothers and my grandpa literally all took turns reading Endurance last year and they all were so into it that I didn't even bother reading it myself because every time I saw any of them they started telling me more about it 😂 3mo
bekakins @TheAromaofBooks amazing! He will definitely enjoy it if he was interested by the original expedition story! 3mo

Mensun Bound was the Director of Exploration to attempt to find Ernest Shackleton‘s shipwreck at the bottom of an Antarctic sea, the Endurance, which sank during his attempt to be the first to reach the South Pole. This book covers both attempts in 2019 (unsuccessful) & 2022, which was successful. The 2022 search was bookended first by the pandemic, and then the Russian invasion of Ukraine, both affecting the morale of the crew. Even so they ⬇️

Texreader persevered through extreme conditions and amazingly discovered it. I‘m sad I don‘t remember it in the news. I too was overwrought about the Russian invasion. This probably won‘t be a favorite of mine, the book can be extremely technical, and you have to know a lot of boating terms, which escape me. But I appreciated the history, and the palpable joy from the author from finding the ship. This is my 2nd book for #Antarctica #readingOceania 9mo
Librarybelle I don‘t remember the discovery mentioned in the news either! 9mo

I started this audiobook today for #Antarctica #readingOceania. I decided to forego Greta and Valdin. I‘ve read way too many books on #NewZealand (6 or 7) and once I started listening to it I wasn‘t too keen on it. This will be only my second book for Antarctica

3.5/5 stars, rounded up. There‘s a lot to like about this book- the exploration of Antártica, the danger of sailing through ice to find Endurance, the Shackleton history, and the discovery of the Endurance and its state. I oscillated between “This is so cool,” to, “This is such a waste of resources.” Though the light and beauty of Antártica sounded cool, the ice and weather ruled out all future travel there for me.
