It follows the life of Mary and her children and grandchildren through a number of key events and issues starting with VE Day, various royal events, touching on Brexit before ending with the beginnings of the COVID-19 pandemic. An interesting take on what Britain is, and its entrenched challenges.

pickI love a good family saga and this one did not disappoint! Jonathan Coe did a nice job of telling the story of the Lamb family beginning on VE Day in 1945 and going until 2020 in the midst of COVID lockdowns. I learned a lot, laughed, cringed, and craved chocolate (thank God Halloween candy is in stores now 😆🤪🤤). I‘ll pick up his other works after reading this one for sure 🤗

pickIf you‘ve liked Coe‘s previous novels focusing on the English, you‘ll probably like this. A social history of England lived through one extended family, starting with VE Day and ending with the pandemic.
I found it a good and interesting read, probably because I could see and hear so many of my family members playing some of these parts. Some parts made me cringe, some very nostalgic and some laugh out loud.
