Overdramatic, compulsive liar Erica Yurken considers herself the cream of the crop at the socially disadvantaged primary school of Barringa East until Alison Ashley arrives - with her nice clothes, dainty earrings & perfect hair. It‘s HATE at first sight for Erica.

Everything is from Erica‘s POV & she‘s not having a great time for the majority of the book (continued in comments)

thegirlwiththelibrarybag - she‘s friendless at school, she‘s a snob, she‘s embarrassed by her family & the area she lives in & the arrival of Alison Ashley really tips her over the edge. Their bumpy road to friendship and Erica‘s slow road to finding herself is just 👌🏼

Absolutely loved rereading one of my childhood faves - can‘t say I felt as sympathetic for Erica as I once did. This was a genuinely funny book that‘s held up pretty well for something published in 1984.

Soubhiville This cover is hilarious- clearly they are school kids but they look like middle aged women at the same time. 🤣 2y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Soubhiville - they look like Karens in training 😂 they‘re only meant to be 10 or 11 years old. 2y
Soubhiville 100%! 2y

Peak childhood memory was being part of the MS Read-A-Thon every year in primary school.

My uncle would good naturedly “forget” how much his per book sponsorship set him back the previous year and always pledged .50c a book ☺️ KA-CHING!

Only my very favourite books were graced with my prized MS Readathon book stickers…. (One year I read so much I qualified for the jump rope of my dreams. I loved that rope.)

Bookzombie What a great memory! 2y
Reggie What happened to the jump rope? 2y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Reggie, I‘m not actually sure - I most likely grew too tall for it. 2y

Me in the group chat throwing my suggestion into the ring for what we should read together in March…

(My childhood copy has the same cover as the top right)

LeahBergen I have the top middle one but I haven‘t read it yet! 2y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @LeahBergen, I love the Penguin Australian Classics hardbacks - they are so gorgeous! I have Playing Beatie Bow, Taronga, and Seven Little Australians. I‘m really looking forward to reading it again - I loved it as a kid. 2y

#BookMail No2 is another Australian Children‘s Classic.Hating Alison Ashley is about how sometimes the new girl in school, who seems to be so perfect that you hate her on sight, is really going to be the best friend you‘ve ever had.I‘d say every girl knows exactly what I mean, school girls can be pretty awful to each other. This isn‘t about bullying, it‘s about the two girls & how life can give you a gift, you just can‘t see it at first sometimes.

Fernoppy I loved this! I read it multiple times as a kid 😍 7y
Joanne1 Oh boy did I love this book when I read it as a kid. Just the name sends me back to those years. 7y
Jeg One of favourites. Read as an adult. 7y

I was feeling pretty underwhelmed until I got to the kids/ya section 😂

As much as I love book lists... 100 books is too much 😅😅😅

MyNamesParadise Thank you so much for the link!! Love Australian books!! 7y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @MyNamesParadise, hyperlinks are one of the best things about Litsy 😊 have you read many? 7y
MyNamesParadise @thegirlwiththelibrarybag based off the ones I scrolled through I haven't read any but I've read Liane Moriarty and Anna Snoekstra. Both of their books take place in Australia. 7y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @MyNamesParadise, lots of potential for you then 😊 7y

I was a huge Robin Klein fan growing up, but her books were hard to find. I remember scouring book stores when we traveled and how exciting it was to find a new one! #FunFridayPhoto
