The Adventures of Nanny Piggins
The Adventures of Nanny Piggins | R. A. Spratt
8 posts | 7 read | 3 to read
Mary Poppins meets Babe in this hilarious novel about three children under the watch of their wonderfully quirky nanny, who happens to be a pig! Yes, a pig. A fabulously sassy and impeccably dressed pig as a matter of fact! With her insatiable urge to eat chocolate (and feed chocolate to everyone she loves), her high-flying spirit, and her unending sense of fun, Nanny Piggins takes Derrick, Samantha, and Michael on a year of surprises, yummy treats, and adventures they'll never forget. Paired with Dan Santat's charming illustrations, comedian and children's TV writer R.A. Spratt's wildly funny debut novel will have adults and kids alike laughing and rooting for the feisty porcine nanny and her three lovable human charges.

Pickpick

Sadly this was my last haul of books from Charlie‘s book swap at a nearby mall before it shut down 😭 My step daughters are half Swedish so the Astrid Lindgren books are for them and the Nanny Piggins are for my niece, Lila. I‘m at my new place today trying to sort it out a bit and get building inspections done. There were so many men for such a small job and they actually arrived before the allotted time! This move has been a long slow process.

Mehso-so

Contains some genuinely questionable life lessons & commentary (in particular, it feels oddly & paradoxically fat-phobic)…but kind of a hoot, tbh, for crabby, judgmental grown-ups (which I sometimes definitely am — not about physical appearances but about a lot of other things 😅). I won‘t rush to share this with impressionable kiddos.

Predictably, Dan Santat‘s illustrations are charming. My favorite character, by far, is Boris the Dancing Bear.

Librariana I was gonna say that the illustrations looked familiar! But a hard pass on potentially fat-phobic anything 😒 3y
monalyisha @Librariana It could‘ve just been me! But I felt like there was a lot of judgment about the way people looked. The overall tone could be a bit hard. It just hit a couple of sour notes for me. 3y

“Nanny Anne was perfect. She did everything perfectly, she said everything perfectly, and everything around her had to be perfect. If something was not perfect, she would not yell. She would sit you down and talk perfectly reasonably to you until you were so tired of her reasonableness that you lost the will to live.”

I decided to put one bookshelf in alphabetical order.

I‘m now sitting in the floor, surrounded by books, wondering if I should have just stayed in bed, reading 😂

On the upside, I got to reread the inscriptions by one of my favourite authors, R.A. Spratt

JennyM Love this. X 6y

I (first) read this all the way back in 2009, it was late at night and my laughing got to be a bit loud and I woke my little sister up 😂 Funny for #30daysofreadathon

I laughed so hard that I woke my sister up 😬😂 #funnybooks

This delightful series is now 9 books strong! Long live Nanny Piggins!

(This series is perfect for reading out loud as each chapter is its own self contained story)

MrsV I've never heard of these. They look fun! 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @MrsV - they are great fun! The author is Australian - so they might not all be available yet internationally - the first few definitely are! I love them! She's one of my Instabuy authors! 8y
